Dan.gerous 2,696 #1 Posted July 22, 2020 I couldnt resist, it was almost free and I figured that a bigger machine is useful, or just use it for a bunch of spare parts if its on its last legs. You guys will be loving the fuel arrangement, he said the fuel pump isn't working so thats the obvious solution. The cutting deck has been butchered and I am not sure about the offset mounting position, he has had a front mounted mower so that might explain it. I guess the exhaust is stopping the bonnet going back on. Told my wife first thing this morning and she gave me the OK so long as I came and helped her artificially inseminate a bunch of pigs.....the levels I will lower myself to to get another little tractor! Now just have a 9 hour drive to go collect it, would be nice to have one on my doorstep a bit more often. So anyway, I am now the proud owner of 2 x C-125's 1 x C161 and whatever my race one is ( I always forget).
cschannuth 3,817 #2 Posted July 22, 2020 You will love the twin Briggs sound and power if it’s in good running condition. This is my dad‘s and has never had anything done to it except a few new batteries and maintenance and it still runs like a top. 4
ebinmaine 71,251 #3 Posted July 22, 2020 Good save sir. Interesting conglomeration of eclectic adjustments on that rig. I agree about the twin Briggs. You'll be impressed with that engine.

The front had been cut out so long grass gets in easier. Probably used to roughly mow a long driveway or roadsides? The offset would help with that as you could keep your wheels on more solid ground. It doesn't say what the engine is other than a twin, I can't see any labelling anywhere. Hope it's a good one as don't really want to use it as a parts machine - this could run my road sweeper once I get it 😊
Redneckdavis 308 #7 Posted July 22, 2020 Horizontal opposed twin..... Oh the beautiful noise that could make.

I know, cant wait to go get it and see what it sounds like - it runs and he still used it up until a few weeks ago. Might hit the road tomorrow and get it, should have gone to day as its raining and cant be bothered doing much else.
Redneckdavis 308 #9 Posted July 22, 2020 I had one in a pulling cub. It was a Briggs, i can't remember HP. Straight piped with whatever size stock was to the floorboards and then up to 3in chrome tips. It sounded like a full fledge cammed up v8. I do believe best lawnmower I've ever heard. Deeeeeep, throaty, hollow 1

I don't know if the mufflers are original but they sound like they're hollowed out some. That engine has that same deep tone. Sounds awesome.

That would be cool to know the reason and if the left front wheel had enough clearance to turn all the way, If mounted under the machine???
Ed Kennell 40,884 #12 Posted July 22, 2020 That offset deck looks like what I need to mow under the pasture fences. Some strange pulleys on there have me scratching my head. A double pulley on the left spindle and the second flat tensioner in the front center.
Dan.gerous 2,696 #13 Posted July 22, 2020 @Ed Kennell Here is the original advert, doesn't really shed any light on the cutting decks odd lopsidedness it the extra pulley. "Wheel horse tractor mower type C161 twin automatic. Condition is Used. Buyer collects. Has been regularly used for the last 15 yrs for cutting long grass with specially adapted ex Flymo front cutter. Hence hood and cutting deck not attached and some metalwork added at front. All the bits to rebuild to original are as in the photos. Engine starts well uses oil (mostly by leaks I think), and needs occasional choke pumping but developes good power. Just needs some TLC. Petrol pump does not work hence green gravity feed tank attached to back of seat. Some metal has been cut from cutting deck to allow blades to see grass better. Tyres in good condition top up once per year. Hydrostatic gearbox works smoothly as does clutch on PTO. Seat is bare metal. Exhaust has been modified and is on last legs. A good base for a rebuild project. Reason or sale have got new Tractor and fitted the front cutter to that." 1

Redneckdavis 308 #16 Posted July 22, 2020 Lol. Sounds foreign. Might have to use the metric drawer on that tractor. Thinking about it. I bet that's funky to drive. I remember back when I worked at a small engine shop i always used a hustler 60in to cut about 10ac but for some reason I had a 72" one day. I must have hit every last tree in the place with that extra deck. Driving that would be like swapping decks at the end of every row.
Dan.gerous 2,696 #17 Posted July 23, 2020 Just got home, a very interesting trip, the guy that owned it is amazing, will post more later. Need a cup of tea, it was only ten hours on the road, but that's long enough.

I used to be original driver and now I'm local only and I'd like to keep it this way for as long as possible I work 8 to 10 hours most days and sometimes well less than half of that is driving.
Ed Kennell 40,884 #20 Posted July 23, 2020 19 minutes ago, TractorJunkie said: Maybe a 60" hangs out far enough? It probably would, but the terrain is really rough and a 60"er would really be throwing sticks, dirt and stones as I have to keep the deck down to get under the bottom wire. Plus, I don't mow with my 520. She is a dedicated snow remover with a heated cab.

Ed Kennell 40,884 #22 Posted July 23, 2020 Actually, I don't like to mow with the twins Eric (520s and 417s) as they throw too much bloomin heat. I like the single 12s for mowing in this heat. 1

Dan.gerous 2,696 #25 Posted July 23, 2020 19 minutes ago, TractorJunkie said: 👍 🤔 wonder if taking the outside blade off?? I got one on an xi thats a big deck This is what he had on the front of the C161, it was offset more on the wheelhorse and he is going to modify it for the John Deere. The wheelhorse deck was modified to mow out the side, he said it had a massive steel counterweight to keep it level. You can still see the two bolts that held it in place in the pictures. The front mounted deck was a better solution. He got the green machine free with 50 hours on the clock because it didn't work. Soon fixed it up and replaced the wheelhorse with it.
