Genny light works backwards!

Well I think I have something wrong with the regulator itself. I replaced the wire on the regulator and connected the center flag of the regulator to Bat positive like it is supposed to be. When turning the key to on the engine cranks. Checking the terminals on the switch I have continuity between bat and start  with the key just at run position. If I remove that wire at the center flag of the regulator this continuity goes away.

Best do a bench test on the Genny just for kicks.

It's more likely the VR is bad.

That wire would most likely have to be a dead short to melt that much then break apart.

Here's my theory Eric. I noticed heavy pitting on the coil contacts the wire connects to inside the regulator. The contacts stuck closed. The center post being connected to ground sent heavy amperage through that wire when in the cranking mode. Whatever was in the battery went thru the switch ( Craig found it burnt) out the heavy cable to the armature connection on the genny thru the small wire I found burnt  through the stuck regulator contacts to the center regulator post to ground ( wire connected to bat ground instead of bat posituve.)

Certainly sounds reasonable.

Can those contacts be cleaned and the VR used?

Mike, if the pitting isn't too bad you can remove the contact arm and file then burnish both contact points. A little soldering is involved but nothing too difficult.

With all you have described, I'd put a test meter to the ignition/starter switch as well.

Reading back, it appears you already checked the switch, disregard!
