how many gauges is too much?

Recommended Posts

I look at gauges like this:  Does it tell me anything that's going to make me change what I'm doing when I look at it?  Hour meter?  No.  Oil pressure (if appropriate)?  Yes.  Oil temperature?  Yes.  CHT?  Yes.  Voltage? Yes.  Amperage?  Yes.  Tachometer?  No.  Fuel level?  Yes.  Hydraulic pressure and fluid temp (if appropriate)?  Yes.

not far off then - but long term knowing hours is good for oil changes. Tacho just looks cool and tells you engine is spinning :D

@meadowfield

i tryed the rpm / fuel gauge combo on my 212, because the fueltank is under the hood,

but i found that it works not pretty well.

this combo can be seen on the right side of the Dash outside.

- yap, i know wrong steering wheel but this was just one i had laying aside and no the Airbag wasn‘t in it - 😂

if it shows the Fueltank is empty i‘m close to half full.

even after i had calibrated it as the manufacturer suggested several times.

The reaction of that fuel gauge is pretty slow.

On my Beast i have the transparent pipe version, that works really well for me.

A quick view and i‘m informed about fuel.

it is a good indicator for long term trips, not to reach the „never comeback“ line.

I agree it's good to know the hours, but you're not going to hit 50 hours and stop what you're doing for an oil change.  Someone like me that doesn't use it very often can just change it every year and be OK with it.  If it's a piece of equipment that gets used all day every day you should probably just put an oil change on the list of things to do every Friday afternoon before you call it a day.  In between those two extremes or to know how many hours are on it when it's time to sell it I would say are exceptions.  But I consider an hour meter to provide strategic information and I wouldn't take up space on the instrument panel for it.  I'd save that for tactical information that makes a difference right now.

or maybe      HAL I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Dave Bowman : What's the problem?

HAL : I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Dave Bowman : What are you talking about, HAL?

HAL : This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

If I had one of those the only time it would be AT 0 is when that given tractor was parked in the basement for maintenance. Even WHAT I consider to be flat spots in the yard still have a slight grade for water runoff.

You could always mount this on the hood.

Our even better, get one of the instrument clusters that the old 4wd vehicles used to have on top of the dash.

Would bolt on there nicely.

Installed the oil sender yesterday.... as the oil was new and didn’t want to drain it - I had to be ingenious :D

good job I have my crane...

I wasn’t sure whether the pan was 3/8 or 1/2 NPT so bought a mix of adapters. The sender is 1/8” bsp.

proof that no oil was lost

finished and in place.

now to make the wiring loom - as this tractor had nothing!

What's your plan to drain the oil, just remove the sender? No room to put a tee in there?

yeah, a long 9/16 socket fits over the whole lot. Just the wire to pull...

I figure it will read quicker if the sender is in the pan - though the oil and pan will all get to temp.

Although I do not have an oil temp sensor, I do have a tachometer, fuel gauge, ammeter, volt meter, and hour meter on my C165.  I the engine was pressure lube, I'd definitely have an oil pressure gauge on it.

Final gauge came, all wired in and working. Not had engine hot enough yet to move the oil temp.
