stolmar 35 #1 Posted June 18, 2020 A very dear friend has brought me a tractor he purchased for his grand kids. He used it all last year with no problems and this spring it would not start. Between all the things going on in life, he finally got it to me. It is a 264-6 model #72042 wheel horse. 945 hrs, in reasonable shape. While checking for spark I noticed something very odd. Turning it over with key, no spark. As it coasted in rotation the tester was lighting up. So I hooked the hot to the starter and lots of spark. Threw some petro in the carb and she fired. Tested the fuel system and found more water/rust and crap than I've seen in a while. I took the carb apart twice before going through the whole system. Tank/pump/lines and carb x 3. I've read here many times to replace most every thing the first time but I'm a cheap prick. Anyway, I could get it to start and run on it's own but surged on low rev's. Carb off again and more crap. Holy $#!+. Torch tip cleaner up the little tube and cleaned everything again and we won the battle. Purrs like a kitten. Now the spark issue. I cleaned all connections and checked all fuses and it is still there. I/we don't know anything about the previous life. Everything else works. Achto 28,845 #2 Posted June 18, 2020 To turn the engine off on a Kohler CV14S the coil needs to be grounded. I'm not familiar with the whole electrical system on this tractor but here are a few guess's. Look for a safety switch that is keeping the engine from sparking while the starter is engaged. Example: some tractors will not let the starter engage if the PTO is engaged, some tractors will let the starter engage with the PTO on but will not let the engine start. This function may be achieved through a relay or just a series of switches. Also check the seat switch.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,267 #3 Posted June 18, 2020 So you still have the ignition problem? You realize this engine has magneto ignition which is self-powered. Do not allow any battery voltage to get to the ignition wire as that will instantly burn up the coil. This model uses a battery type of ignition switch to control a kill relay to control the magneto ignition. The relay simply grounds the ignition wire to shut it off. The pto must be off, the transmission in neutral and the parking brake applied to get spark. If there is an operator in the seat the above conditions are not required and you should have spark. Hope these diagrams work. The serial number of the tractor identifies the model year 49xxx, 59xxx and 69xxx for 1994, 1995 and 1996. The diagrams are listed for 1994 and 1995 only. Keep us posted with your progress. Garry
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,267 #4 Posted June 18, 2020 Threw some color at the large schematic and found a mistake in it so this may help. Garry
