Anyway to prevent this??

Recommended Posts

Over the years of using my 520H to mow grass, it has become a nuisance when the grass gets caught in the flywheel grass screen and you have to reach over and scrape it off so the engine won't overheat or the carb won't get dirty. Anyway to prevent it?

I can't find it, but I remember a thread on this problem.    One guy added a 90  degree 10 or 12 " flue elbow to the intake.

It has an inner screen that spins like the Kohler. Take the outer one off. The inner one will throw it off just like the Kohler....

When I changed from a side discharge deck to a rear discharge deck that problem went away.

The front tire can kick up much of that grass under some conditions.  One guy on here fabricated a fender to help with the problem.  Some old farm tractors had a shaker screen in front of the radiator, might be an idea for someone to develop.

There's your answer. The outer grill will be there to keep the health and safety bods happy. Just in case you try and grab hold of the spinning screen.

Your right it like that crazy plastic cover on the Classic 315 over the PTO and mule drive.

at one point I mounted a small snow brush on the left side cover with hook-and loop tape (Velcro) so I could brush away the grass and leaves without disengaging the PTO and reaching over/down to remove with hand

this worked fairly well - but at times the grass / leaves would get sucked behind the blower housing guard - so I'm back to removing the stuff by hand

I've just invented a solution. Already applied for a patent. You can thank me later.  :D

I've seen the rotating screens get covered up with grass clippings, too. In a nice swirl pattern.

At least with a fixed screen, it's safe to lean over and brush the debris off while the engine is running -- can't do that with a rotating screen. To that end, I can well remember the JD 112 may family had when I was growing up. JD didn't use the normal Kohler rotating screen; they had it omitted, and instead put a fixed mesh screen over it that attached to the engine tin. It was easy to lean down and brush it off a few times while mowing. Very similar to the mesh screens that Kohler put on their twins.

I've seen a brush install on an old Gravely garden tractor with a Kohler where the engine is over the rear hitch.

That's not as daft as it looks. Something along the same idea. Up to the bottom of the bonnet side and detachable.
