What is your matter of urgency?  I might have a Briggs single if we ever make it back to Uncle Jim’s.

I *THINK* it’s a vertical shaft... but many parts are usable.

If the Briggs is a cast iron sleeve I'd be perfectly happy rebuilding it... But carefully weigh the costs of that vs finding a known good Kohler.

Well, see, thats the thing...

Im thinking Kohler...lol....Yes, HARLEY too, lol!... and MorePower😳

Also wondering if/when i pull it, is it worth anything besides scrap to someone?

I dont 'know' these things yet; my learning curve is steep, lol....

If it's rebuildable it will be worth something to those who prefer Briggs.

If too much money has to be put into it then it wouldn't be worth the value.

No matter what you decide, save the clutch parts drive pulley and mounting plate.  The drive pulley and inner bearing race for the PTO are 1", and the thrust bearing used on that engine would allow you to use engines you would otherwise be unable to use due to lack of ball bearings on the crankshaft.  Bill

I would be on the lookout for a good used Kohler.

Ok, now that i have it off the tractor...

Dont spose you could explain or show me those parts/tell me how? Im still very new to all of this. Can i do it all with hand tools or are specialty tools needed? Ive never tore into an engine before. Leastways not since i was 7 or so, n dad was scrapping that 350 Rocket n it kept me outta his hair, lol...

Any help would be appreciated, thankyou😊

The mounting adapter plate has two sets of holes which may be useful depending on which engine you chose to replace it with.  If you remove the PTO brake and the clutch you will see a metal sleeve on the crankshaft that is held in place with two half moon pieces of metal and 4 bolts.  The ID of that sleeve is 1". The outside of the sleeve serves as the bearing race for the bearing inside the clutch hub. Most Kohlers from 10 hp up had a 1 1/8" crankshaft.  All the Briggs use a 1" crankshaft.  When you pull the drive pulley off the crankshaft it should have a ball bearing on the back side.  Since Briggs doesn't have a ball bearing supported crankshaft like the Kohler's this bearing, combined with a plate mounted on the engine provides the necessary crankshaft support to handle the side loading from the PTO clutch.  The sleeve and thrust bearing are NLA from Toro, but I have seen them listed in the classified section.  These parts can be used on engines without ball bearing crankshafts, thus giving you replacement options you wouldn't normally have.

Parts Tree should have a parts list and exploded diagram.  Hope this helps.  Bill
