Kohler 10hp mag bogging down

Recommended Posts

Whguy46041

Was told I had little to no compression which is why my engine was bogging down when I engaged the pto. Here’s a couple of videos. I was told to try replacing the head gasket and cleaning the valves and piston and it should fix it. So got it all back together put a new belt on and it didn’t fix it. I can engage the pto about a 1/3 of the way and it works I put the pto lever all the way down and the engine bogs down still. Engine sounds like it runs great without engaging the pto. White smoke on initial start up but that’s about it. Any ideas?

Don't know what model you have or what engine/ignition but sounds to me like the ignition is being shut off.

There are 2 pto switches stacked together. One controls the starter and the other controls the ignition.

When the pto is on that ignition pto switch gives the ignition responsibility to the seat switch. The system thinks there is no operator present or the operator fell out of the seat and engine shuts off.

Post your numbers so we can link you to a diagram that is easy to understand.

Are all the spindles free spinning? Can you turn the pto by hand easily when engine is off and no belt on it?

It’s a 310-8 with a Kohler 10hp magnum. Right now one pto switch is bypassed because it went out and caused the tractor to not start at all.

All the spindles are free spinning yes.

The circuit you need is the "Spark" circuit.

Hope you realize the magneto ignition is self-powered and the single ignition wire when grounded shuts the ignition off. That is how the safety system for the ignition works. It grounds out the ignition.

Do not allow any battery voltage to get to the ignition wire. That will instantly burn up the coil.

So I need to just order a new pto switch then? Or is there away to bypass the pto safety switch  and have the tractor running back to normal?

Are you sitting in the seat when engaging the PTO?

The seat and PTO safety switch work together so you can not engage the PTO if someone isn't sitting in the seat .

From the sound of the video it is not bogging down, it's shutting off. Couldn't see the video just has the sound.

This is the switch that is bypassed right now that would not allow the tractor to start originally. The purple and tan wires are the ones bypassed together that plug into this switch.

Seat switch is bypassed and this switch is bypassed do to it going bad and not allowing the tractor to start at all. I’d rather just bypass the pto switches all together.

Check you seat switch.

With no operator in the seat the ignition is ground and engine shuts off.

With operator in the seat the seat switch should open so the ignition is not grounded.

May be a simple switch adjustment so the switch opens with operator in seat if the switch is under the seat.

If the switch is insde the seat the switch is shorted for some reason.

If you bypassed the seat switch that is your problem. You permanently grounded the ignition.

The pto switch removes the seat switch from the circuit when the pto is off - that is why it runs with pto off.

How is that seat switch bypassed?

Wires cut? Wires connected together?

Garry you’re a genius lol. Rewired the seat switch and I’m back in business. Now with that being said how can I bypass the seat switch and still get the pto to work properly?

We already knew that Garry @gwest_ca was a genius!  :confusion-confused:   Why would you want to eliminate the seat switch when it is working fine?  That safety switch system is there ti save you and others from being injured.   If it ain't broke;  don't fix it!
