Have you had this problem?

The hood of my 312-8 rattles like a can full of rocks.  Discovered it emanates from the hood hinge pin behind the mule drive mount.  Currently I have solved it by using vice grips to clamp the hood hinge brackets to the lower hinge brackets where the hinge pin passes through.  Hood is now very secure and does not rattle at all.  This makes a huge difference with the noise while running the tractor.

Have you come up with a solution or just living with the noise?

UHM... You came up with the solution... Couple bucks for small Harbor Freight vice grips and your good to go! :handgestures-thumbupright:

Could even paint them red...

Every WH I own gets nylon bushings on the hinge pins and almost everywhere else too.. tightens them up pretty good.

Common on the tinny 300-500 series.Pivots wallow out.  A good welder can fill them in and re-drill

something quick

3/8 x 1 bolts and nyloc nuts/washers snugged up enough to allow the hood to move but not rattle.

@SylvanLakeWH Yup the vice grips did the job, but ugly.  Plus I have to remove them whenever I want to raise the hood.

@Stepney and @TractorJunkie I like the nylon bushing and nyloc nuts solution.  Makes sense.

@squonk suppose I could pull out the welder, but this makes it a bigger job.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Some have used Chevy door hinge repair bushings. i think you have to drill hole bigger for those. The hood is adjustable front to back where it's bolted to the hinges. It also has a metal strip welded under the the back that fits over the steering tower. With it adjusted in the proper position takes out a lot of rattles. I replaced the hood rod on my 312-8. Not have a lathe to cut the grooves for c-clips I used 1/4" hose clamps.

I replace the original c-clipped rod with a 3/8" rod threadedon each end . Then use Nylock nuts for a litle snugness. sure is easier to remove and reinstall.  i plad to add bushing one of these days.

local h/w store probably has a pull out small drawer part section. go to nylon washers and fill in the gaps i also use super lube on my swing and pivot points, that super lube is also very good on the rubber socket on the hood tabes, it saves the rubber , pete

@squonk You called it.  Once dismantled I discover the holes in the hood brackets were oblong by at least a 1/4 inch.  Welded, filled and drilled new 3/8" holes.

@TractorJunkie Your 3/8" bolts and nyloc's worked to perfection.  Hood is now securely in place.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

So, now you got another problem -  what to do with the extra vice grips... :confusion-confused:

:ychain:

Glad the issue is resolved!

Can never have too many vice grips.  Thanks to RS and its abundance of experts the problem was easily solved.
