Workhorse GT1642 steering problem

Recommended Posts

I just put new tires on the front of my Work Horse GT1642 and now the steering slips/pops when turning especially at low speeds. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

Look at where the steering shaft gear meets the fan gear.

You will need to tighten up that connection of the gear teeth by shimming the shaft so those gear teeth are meshed tighter together. Front, back or both, however you can get them tighter.

Wallfish has pointed out one of the most common problems.Vertical motion of the steering shaft  needs to be looked at as well.If you pull up on the steering wheel and detect significant vetrical motion then you need to address play at the upper support

as well.

1) Use the COLLAR #26 to zero-out vertical movement of steering column.

2) draw the fan GEAR #15 back into the steering column gear by adding SHIM WASHERs 16 or 23 onto end of Lower Steering gear # 15 until slop is reduced and little play exists..

This image has a NUT on the end of the lower steering gear...MOST have just a COTTER PIN.   Adjustment is the same.

Part # 19 in Dave's diagram is prolly wallowed out. I probably have changed a dozen. And if the tractor has hyd. lift it's prolly busted at the mounting bolts as well.

I can't get enough travel out of the fan gear shaft to tighten up the lash in the fan gear and steering shaft gear. It seems like part #12 isnt allowing the fan gear shaft to slide back towards the steering wheel enough. And the fit of part #19 on the fan gear is not too sloppy, actually a slip fit

The hole the steering shaft from the steering wheel goes into wallows out. This  causes the little gear to move away from the fan gear. The support hole for the fan gear shaft does not wear out

Gotcha, mine doesn't seem to wore out so I guess I got lucky. I ended up putting washers between where #12 bolts to the frame on the front of the tractor, so it moved my fan gear back about an 1/8". Then I adjusted the collar on the steering shaft up to make it a snug fit on down into the fan gear. Seems much much better now. Any idea what washers #29 and #32 are for?

They are to take up slop and center the shaft in # 28

Got everything back together and it works great! I went and checked the piece the fan gear mounts to on my 417-A just for fun and sure enough its cracked where it mounts to the frame... go figure
