CCW 1,379 #1 Posted May 12, 2020 Not wanting to hijack @ebinmaine muffler thread I will ask my new question here. My preference is "quiet". In my suburban neighborhood I would like to have my 312-8 run as quietly as my car. Is it possible to get or build a muffler that will accomplish this without severely impacting performance?
ebinmaine 72,675 #2 Posted May 12, 2020 Never worry about hijacking one of my threads. It's all good. Not only do we go off topic on a regular basis but you're still on topic anyway. The most quiet muffler that I know of personally is the Cub muffler from the late 70s. Only thing is, that's a completely different shape than the 3, 4, 500 series from the 80s and newer. I'll be watching to see what the others say about the newer mufflers...
littleredrider 409 #4 Posted May 12, 2020 I have a muffler on a K241 I picked up last year, I think the guy said it came off a Ford or Jacobsen tractor, but the muffler is pretty big, would be tough to mount on a 'horse and have it look decent. But it the quietest muffler I've ever heard. Really can not hear it. The flywheel fan is louder than the exhaust is. I'll see if I can get a pic of it. I can't remember the maker....
Stepney 2,354 #5 Posted May 12, 2020 I had a Nelson brand muffler on a 1974 Ford LGT 14hp, and it was much quieter than any Cub. The rattling of the machine was louder than the motor. No idea where you'd ever find one today. Local guy has a muffler off a 1 cylinder Walker mower on his Bolens 1050, 10hp Wisconsin.. very quiet. But again, I have no idea what sort of Walker that muffler was off.
