Lee1977 7,224 #1 Posted May 12, 2020 Has anybody come up with a fix for the worn out pot metal and roll pin holes on these steering wheels.
oliver2-44 10,781 #2 Posted May 12, 2020 @Lee1977 A picture of whats worn out would help. The steering wheel on my C-81 was broken at the hub but the outer wheel was intact. The plastic was split off the steel insert that goes over the steering shaft. I JB Welded the hub back together and onto the steel insert. i t was a little challenging to clamp. it's held up for about 2 years now. Could you get a short piece of steel the diameter of the steering shaft to use as a mold. Slick the shaft up with some very fine sandpaper and coat the shaft with several applications of Armor All or silicone spray to make it non-stick. Then coat the inside of the hub, including filling the roll pin holes with JB Weld or PC-7. Then insert the non stick shaft and let it harden. When dry the shaft should tap out with a hammer. Then you could redrill the roll pin hole.....Just a thought
midpack 1,011 #3 Posted May 12, 2020 interested as well. I put a later model (1990-ish) steering wheel on one of my C-175s' because I liked the thicker grip and the wheel diameter was about 1" larger IIRC. just wondering if i'm going to have problems later. Lee1977 7,224 #4 Posted May 12, 2020 Pictures would not help, it looks good, the pot metal is tight to the plastic. The pot metal is worn out so are the roll pin holes. It move enough that the wheel hits the top of the 520 dash. has two small notches on the back of the wheel that has worn away. I have a plan if I can get one of my machinist friend to do it. I got the roll pin out as these wheel have a blind hole and the pin only had a little rust on the ends. 46 minutes ago, midpack said: interested as well. Don't used that wheel for anything but steering. My guess is that the previous owner used it for support getting on and off as the tractor came from an Estate Sale. midpack 1,011 #5 Posted May 12, 2020 well, so far it's done a years worth of snowthrower duty fine, lots of weight on the tractor front and rear, and I do use the wheel getting on and off. i'll just use it and if I run into trouble, figure it out then
Lee1977 7,224 #6 Posted May 12, 2020 I have a temporary fix so I can still used it. I used 1/4" washers and squared them up on three sides to fit into the recess on the plastic wheel and bolted it all together with a 3 1/2" bolt. It's still got about i/8" play up and down but it's not hitting the dash.
