oil temp gauge

would anybody have an idea why my d160 transmission oil temp gauge pegs out when i turn the ignition key to the on position??  even tho the tractor hes not been running.thanks

Could be a short in the wiring but most likely the gauge or the sending unit has died...Disconnect eh lead from the sending unit.  Use your multimeter to read resistance from the terminal on the sending unit to ground.  Thne start her up and run her around for awhile.  Then shut it down and repeat the reading.  if resistance stays the same sending unit is bad if it changes then gauge is bad.

yes sir  it is the temperature sending unit      the stud spins in the back of the unit  is this something i can purchase at oreillys  auto thanks for all your help

Sending units have to be matched to the gauge they are running.  Your best bet buy a new gauge and will come with correct sending unit.    Get an electrical one most mechanical gauge sending units will not fit in the hydro pump.
