1988SS 50 #1 Posted May 4, 2020 I'm going over my new to me 314 -8. I noticed the right wheel inner fender had severe gouging due to the tire chain rubbing. I can see the wheel hub is recessed 1/8" from the end of the axle. I can see the inner fender/gas tank shield plate can be bent closer to the tank. Can I loosen the set bolts and move the hub outwards. I loosened the set bolts but it appears the hub is not moving. I plan to heat the hub and use a puller to pull hub outwards---good or bad idea? You can move it out, but a hub puller tends to break the hubs. I'm not good at describing the method, but do a search here for hub pullers and I think you will see some good thread and pics to help out. You can also drive it around a bit with the screws removed and that will loosen them up sometimes. Randy

I would look at the rim, might have the wrong set back. From the edge of the dish to the curve in the rim about an half inch is normal. I've seen them with 1 inch or more and chains become a problem. That puts the rim closer to the center of the machine. Something I do with chains is use a zip tie to cinch off and tuck the excess chain. Wheel Horse wheel with minimum off set. troutbum70 858 #4 Posted May 4, 2020 This is the very best way to remove stuck hubs.
Sam Pasch 450 #5 Posted May 4, 2020 My 867 had a stuck hub that I made a home made puller for. It was so stuck that it bent my puller in half.😁
1988SS 50 #6 Posted May 4, 2020 Thanks for all your comments. I do have the 1" negative offset rims. I may still pull the hubs outward with a 'hub safe' puller sometime this year. The chains were zip tied closely to the tires - in fact the tire sidewalls were hugged by the chains.
troutbum70 858 #7 Posted May 4, 2020 Is it possible that the cross links are longer than needed allowing them to extend farther down the side walls than needed?
