What did you do today?

Took the boy hunting this morning, he got a squirrel, I got nothing.

Then I came home and got my dad's truck read for safety inspection. The cap installer wired the brake light wrong, so it worked with the turn signal. I've inspected it without the cap the last few years because it was already off at SI time. He's not taking it off this year, so the light has to work correctly.

I stopped by one of the local hardware stores and pulled the trigger on a Milwaukee M18 16" chain saw.  Yes, the big box store has the same tool at a lower price - 40 miles away.  Wasn't worth investing a large part of the dav to make that trip.  Besides, the hardware store is also the local Toro dealer.  I don't mind paying a bit more for something to support a local resource.

Once home, I opened it up, greased the tip sprocket filled the bar oil, checked for bar oil pump was working, then made a few test cuts.  I had a 3 amp hour battery in it and started making an endgrain cut lengthwise in a log.  Leaned into it like I would a gas saw.  That overheated the battery in a short amount of time.  I swapped for a 6 amp hour battery and got better results.  Didn't lean on it as much either.

First impressions:

It is not a saw I'd use for felling a tree much bigger than 8" diameter.

It is not a gas saw.  Seems to want a lighter touch when cutting.

Unknown battery life.

Probably happier with larger capacity batteries.

Would be a good pruning saw for use in a man lift - no rope start, pull the trigger and it goes.

Strikes me as a good saw for small jobs.  No gas to mess with, slap a battery in and go.

This has been my experience with electric saws. They are great for lift work, and pruning, but I don't like them for any sort of trunk work on anything of any size.

Agreed.

Trina will use her Kobalt battery saw for small felling or most any limbing/ trimming.

We find the gas powered saws are better for felling overall.

Not sure I could really set a size limit from battery to gas because situations vary so much.

Not to mention that the electric motor can't really deliver the shock-force that the gas engine and slipper clutch can, so an electric can't un-bind itself.

Yeah the tires are shot. Been trying to get this roof done so I can work out of the sun.  Lose to being finished. Then I can get it on jackstands and sort out some issues.

The Trina person and the Momma started a generator house today.

This'll be covered with galvanized metal panels.

I finished up a new dock sections today.  Next year, it will be installed 90 degrees to the main dock in front of the pontoon mooring spot.  We will keep this section of the dock adjusted to the water level, making it easier to get on and off the pontoon.

Today I cleaned my house, puttered on the C-85 and put more panels on. My father and I got the K341 generator extension off and realized that the block and pan are completely different than the tractor stuff. So, the spare M12 may be going in for the time being. Then I went to a car show with my father here that’s on Tuesdays all summer. Puttered some more on the C-85 when I got back. Now relaxing to bed.

Mrs 8n and I took the kayaks out on the lake for a paddle this afternoon.  My first outing this year in a kayak.  Mrs 8n has been out a couple times.  Not sure where summer went.  We normally take them out more.

Today, I visited my mother, My father was at my uncle’s woodlot but I did see him later. After that I finished up the hat project I’ve been working on. I may still add to it.

I then worked on the C-85 and finished an organizational project with my extra parts.

After that was finished back on the C-85 until 3.  I went with my father to a Cousins who has what my Cousin calls “Happy Hour” where my Fathers side of the family gathers and chats. Once I was back home I put away my other tractors with the added new space from moving stuff out, and I’m puttering on the C-85 for a while.

We pulled the pontoon out of the lake today.  Clyde, the C-195 was used to maneuver the loaded pontoon trailer into its parking spot.  So much easier to use Clyde than the Ram 1500 to do this.

Well I didn’t make bread or pancakes but I did make progress. I got all the roof metal on. Just need to trim the ends a little bit. Wasn’t too bad. I ordered the metal 2” longer in case I had a bunch of sawtoothing on the ends from being out of square. I was a 3/16” off across 36’. Not bad for a regular joe.

Are you going to extend the roof between the buildings to provide complete roof over your truck?

Yes sir but the truck will not be under there. That area will get pavers and rock in the center. Long story as to why it’s not concrete. If I ever have a meet and greet, I’ll explain it to you. :D

This morning I took the ground blind up to the farm and set it up for the boy for archery season. Ran into my dad while I was there. He was just hanging out on a stand near where I wanted to set up, so he came over and helped me, which was great, because I don't think I would have gotten the first side of the blind up without someone else to hold the rest of the thing still.
