What did you do today?

For not being at work today I have been pretty busy.

 

Ran 880 lbs of mostly sheet metal across the scale, ran to a friend's house and cut down a dead tree, and hauled half of it away. It was bigger than I remembered and I didn't take the right stuff, so I ran out of fuel and the only chain I had went dull. Not the end of the world as the trailer was pretty well full on this run anyway and I should make a second trip just because of weight.

 

Then I came home and did some brakes.

My brother in law worked for Goodyear.  Decades ago, he got the assignment to run the schedule for rides when it was doing publicity in Akron.  One of the dignitaries did not show up for their ride so he and my sister sat in on that ride.  It was one of the longer scheduled rides that day.

 

This was long enough ago that the paint job was silver with the Goodyear script in blue.

Had the Snapper RER I sold to my neighbor come visit today.

He’d grown tired of pull-starting 12.5 HP (he acknowledged I’d warned him) and was ready to take me up on my promise to install his new battery. Did a full cleanup of the starting and charging electrical connections to forestall any issues and they tested to spec. Dropped in the battery and it started right up. Waved a smiling neighbor back across the street.

I have my dad's old Snapper. I usually use it a couple time a year, just jump it off the first start with one of my Wheel Horses. After that it's easy to pull start.

I will be there in my dreams. Can't wait for all the YouTube videos of it. I just love Customs and Street Rods, sad to say it will be mostly late model (1970 and newer is late model to me) cars. If the owners are proud of them that is fine, it keeps the hobby going and makes me appreciate the real Kustom Kruisers that much more.

Went back and finished up that tree this morning. My chain didn't just go dull, there is metal in the trunk.

 

My assumption is there may have been a fence there at some point, or possibly a wire cage, since its the right gauge for either, and I have found it at three spots, each about 1/4 of the way around.

 

I'll learn more when I start splitting the logs and see the rest of the pattern.

Yup. That will do it. 

 

I was using a chain saw to demo the front porch roof on our 100 year old house in Mo.  Had a big built up beam across the front that I was taking down in sections.  All of a sudden the saw was making a right hand turn type cut.  Inspection of the cut pieces showed that I had cut a nail lengthwise.

Occasions like that - and cutting roots from the ground  - calls for a good sawzall with a  6 TPI blade.

I've got a couple blades for a Sawzall that have a similar tooth pattern as a bow saw blade for that kind of work.
