Took the boy hunting this morning, he got a squirrel, I got nothing. 

 

Then I came home and got my dad's truck read for safety inspection. The cap installer wired the brake light wrong, so it worked with the turn signal. I've inspected it without the cap the last few years because it was already off at SI time. He's not taking it off this year, so the light has to work correctly.

I stopped by one of the local hardware stores and pulled the trigger on a Milwaukee M18 16" chain saw.  Yes, the big box store has the same tool at a lower price - 40 miles away.  Wasn't worth investing a large part of the dav to make that trip.  Besides, the hardware store is also the local Toro dealer.  I don't mind paying a bit more for something to support a local resource.

 

Once home, I opened it up, greased the tip sprocket filled the bar oil, checked for bar oil pump was working, then made a few test cuts.  I had a 3 amp hour battery in it and started making an endgrain cut lengthwise in a log.  Leaned into it like I would a gas saw.  That overheated the battery in a short amount of time.  I swapped for a 6 amp hour battery and got better results.  Didn't lean on it as much either.

 

First impressions:  

It is not a saw I'd use for felling a tree much bigger than 8" diameter.

It is not a gas saw.  Seems to want a lighter touch when cutting.

Unknown battery life.

Probably happier with larger capacity batteries.

Would be a good pruning saw for use in a man lift - no rope start, pull the trigger and it goes.

Strikes me as a good saw for small jobs.  No gas to mess with, slap a battery in and go.

This has been my experience with electric saws. They are great for lift work, and pruning, but I don't like them for any sort of trunk work on anything of any size.

Agreed. 

 

Trina will use her Kobalt battery saw for small felling or most any limbing/ trimming.

 

We find the gas powered saws are better for felling overall.  

 

Not sure I could really set a size limit from battery to gas because situations vary so much.
