Handy Don 14,062 #8327 Posted June 15 Got help beefing up the hinges that join the forward and rearward decks on my son’s folding utility trailer. Friend used his lathe to take material off the bold head, shorten the nut, and prep the ends of the DOM tubing I used to make the pivot bushing.
8ntruck 7,833 #8328 Posted June 16 I got the first 4 sections of dock into the lake yesterday. These weren't too bad, as they connect end to end. Got the last three in today. Not quite so easy, though. These 8 foot sections connect side to side - a bit more work to fit together. Working in deeper water, too. Good workout, though. Wading in waist deep water and lifting and manuvering the dock sections into place. At one point I pulled my 3/4" combo wrench out of my pocket and heard a splash behind me. The 9/16" wrench also in in that pocket came out as well. Nope, I didn't find it. Have to find a 'fishing' magnet now. Probably a 'lake tool' I'd ought to have anyhow. Scooped some leaves out of the lake at the shoreline, leaving some cart work for Morgan, the 14-8 tomorrow.
ebinmaine 72,669 #8329 Posted June 16 Quite a busy weekend. Saturday we hiked Green Mountain for a calorie burning and to see how my fitness is going. Considering I haven't done any hiking of moderate size I did well. That's very encouraging. This is the fire tower at the top. This junco was at the base of the tower collecting grass for a nest. Zoom in and you'll find it looks like it has a mustache. Sunday I spent most of the day in the workshop. Our electrician friend is scheduled to be here the 21st. I knew we had some wire to be fastened up. Trina knew we had to make a list of needed parts. Both done. Trina was of course outside doing everything she could to stay out from under a roof as usual. They moved the remaining loam and cow manure from up by the barn to beside the garden. That was probably 10 trips. Covered the crap pile for next year's use. While she and the Momma were out playing in the 🐄 🐮 💩 I hung this heater so it can be hard wired. I also swapped the type of door lock/latch we use on the new workshop space. We were using a standard hasp. That obviously wasn't able to be opened from the inside when locked. We both found that unacceptable for convenience and safety. I changed to a Yardlock Shed Lock. Basically a screen door handle inside with a wire that feeds through the door to the exterior lock. If you're outside, it opens with a combination and stays unlocked but latchable. If you're inside just push the tab like any door latch and the door opens whether it's locked or not. Seems to be quite a good design.

953 nut 59,969 #8334 Posted June 16 With the BIG SHOW coming up and family coming into town Sunday for my wife's birthday I took a swing at the "Honey-do-list." The list was too long to accomplish in a couple of days so I asked my wife to prioritize the tasks she hoped to have done. I managed to complete tasks 1, 3, 5, and 7 today. She asked why I hadn't done jobs 2, 4, and 6 I told her I only do ODD JOBS! Looking forward to seeing everybody at the show. 1
8ntruck 7,833 #8335 Posted June 18 More leaf muck shoveling in the lake late this afternoon. Used Pack Rat, the Allis Chalmers B-110 to pull the cart full of leaf muck up to the woods.
adsm08 3,238 #8336 Posted June 18 What is the proper past-tense conjugation of "to sweat"? I did that, and tried to avoid working too much at work. I was talking to the service director about that today, mostly about how it's killing me trying to keep myself throttled back at work this week, because usually I am all go, but I'm off Friday for the Show, and then Monday and Tuesday I'm not in the shop, I'm in Fredrick for training, and we don't work weekends in my shop, so after tomorrow I'm out for 5 consecutive days, and it doesn't do anyone any good for me to stack myself up with work, then leave for three business days, because either the jobs just sit, or someone else has to finish my work. Neither is good.

No. I will say that my body does not tolerate it the way it used to. I still enjoy the high heat/high humidity stretches of summer, but after being out in it for 9 to 12 hours a day three or more months straight I start getting sick by the end of the day. And that's keeping on top of proper hydration.

I changed the Mahindra engine oil & filter, hydraulic fluid (6 gallons) and 2 filters, air filter, fuel filter & fuel filter bowl & gasket, pulled the tractor outside, then used oil-sorb on the shop floor, swept everything up. Pulled it back in, and as I prepared to shut it off, go inside & shower, put the bucket down on a full gallon of Mobile 1 10W30 which promptly exploded all over the tractor & my shop. Uttered several choice words, threw down a bunch more oil-sorb, wiped down the tractor & called it a day. Cleaned up the mess this morning before driving to the show. Found nobody at the hotels to Yammer with, so I called it a day. 🥺 Edited June 20 by HyperPete
Mickwhitt 5,131 #8343 Posted June 20 Getting hot here in the UK. Today may break the hottest day record and see us struggle in 33 degree Celsius heat. Not good for us English men, even if we do take our mad dogs out for a walk at midday. We don't do AC as a thing in houses, simply never the need for it in the past. But I listened a piece on the wireless recently about having to think more about cooling our buildings with the climate change issue. They spoke about ancient builders knowing about various ways to cool structures without electrickery etc. Trouble is they weren't building in Yorkshire, where it's hot for five days then reverts to cold windy and miserable lol.

Yes, we are getting heat as well. 33 most of next week as well with the humidity factored in it is supposed to feel like 44. And in the winter we can get below -30. Need to be prepared for both. We have a propane furnace in the house and another one in the shop., House also has a wood pellet stove and central AC.

We get about the same temp ranges here. Multiple sources of heat and cool. One thing I've been very happy with lately is the unplanned discovery that our new workshop stays quite cool in comparison to outside air. We have a very large air conditioner to put in there but it looks like we may only use it just a handful of times a year if at all.

My shop stays fairly cool for the first half of the summer so long as I keep the doors shut and don't pull in with hot engines because the floor takes a long time to heat up. Unfortunately, when that big slab of concrete does finally get warm it stays that way until fall. I plan on adding central air to the the shop furnace some day. You are a Joe Cocker fan, I presume? No not really, before my time to be honest. Curiously I drove down the road where he was born today, I knew he was from Sheffield but not exactly where. Another famous musician from the same little village, Crookes, is Paul Carrack of Mike and the mechanics fame. His parents had a decorating supplies shop there, still going today. We produced jarvis cocker, who could sing a bit, the arctic monkeys, who can't sing a note, Def Leppard who were terrible at spelling (D, E and F divisions were the three divisional command areas of Sheffield police and so the band nicked them to indicate their place of birth), The Human league and Heaven 17 sang along to the 80's in odd clothing with even odder hair do's. Yeah Sheffield has had its fair share of success stories, stainless steel was invented here, crucible steel, Bessemer conversion, many engineering firsts. Pity it's a shadow of its former self and probably most remembered for the Hillsborough football disaster, part of the dark decade of the 80's when so many bad things happened, including the PanAm flight 103, Lockerbie bombing.
8ntruck 7,833 #8350 Posted June 21 Getting back to a plumbing project in the lake house. I've removed the old tank type water heater and am in the process of installing a tankless water heater. It is a small u it, as it only needs to supply a bathroom and a kitchen sink. It is mounted and wired. It has 1/2" compression fittings for supply and output lines. The only service valve set i could find locally were 3/4" pipe thread. The space on the wall and the location of the fittings on the heater require 90 degree elbows to fit the service valves. I have a solution, but I think I can do better. Another trip to the hardware store will be needed tomorrow morning, this time with the heater to see if there is an elbow with the proper combination of thrad types. Hopefully, we will have the lake house up and running this weekend. The old water heater will make a pretty good burn barrel with a little work.
