Internet Antenna ???

Recommended Posts

Moparfanforever

I have a metal shop that is about thirty yards from my house ( my house has phone line internet ) and my shop has satellite internet that i am wanting to get away from.

According to my phone , i have a strong signal at my shop that is coming from my house and was wanting to know a good way to pick up the signal from my house and get it into my shop. I have a mancave framed in wood inside the shop where my laptop is located. I seen a youtube video that a guy remodeled his metal shop and he just drilled a small hole in his wall and put some kind of antennae through the hole and picked up a signal from his house , but he wasn't specific on what he did.

My satellite is on one side of the shop and my laptop is about fifty feet on the other side of the shop. There is a thick flat style coax cable running from the satellite to the modem. The electrician who wired the shop also run a heavy flat blue coax from one side to the other.

Could a person drill a hole in the metal shop siding and stick an antennae through it and set a wifi modem in about the middle of the shop ???

I am a little ( ALOT !! ) challenged at this stuff , but i am sure i can do it with some guidance.

Thanks !!!

Darrell

You mentioned that according to your phone, you have a strong WiFi signal from your house in the shop.  If that's the case you already have your home WiFi ready to use I would think.  If the issue is the signal inside the shop, you can look into a Mesh type of WiFi, such as Google Nest WiFi mesh system.  Basically what it does is has a primary router in you home, then remote pods which accept that WiFi signal and "rebroadcast" it in the remote location.  It's like $300 for a 3 pod system, I have it at home and it works great!

Thanks for the reply !!

Maybe I overstated my problem.

I have a good wifi signal outside of my metal shop , I need to find a way to get it inside of my shop. When i go inside of my shop , my phone loses wifi signal.

Thanks !!

Most of us wear tin foil hats.

As nylon stated "you can look into a Mesh type of WiFi, such as Google Nest WiFi mesh system".

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material, or in the case of a Faraday cage, by a mesh of such materials.

They make a cat 7 cable, outdoor 100' less than $50. Super fast! I seen were someone took a shovel, flat style, sunk it on an angle under the sod and make a crevice. Put the cable in the crevice and step Down the sod. that is if you have sod? Just got to remember it is there if you dig! Metal building are pretty tough on WiFi.
