3WHDave 60 #1 Posted April 23, 2020 I am looking for the best muffler for my D-180. The original mufflers were not on the machine when bought and all the literature show two vertical cylindrical units. I have found a Walker on Amazon with a 90 degree inlet-port. My concern is that the Walker inlet port measures 1.375 on the I.D. an a standard 1 inch pipe is 1.315 (or a bit less). It doesn't sound like much, but 0.060 is difficult to compress a tube. Do I simply add some copper tape/muffler wrap/ect. and expect it to be right? On a footnote, I did purchase a couple of "puck" mufflers with a 1" pipe thread, and they do fit. But I would like to be closer to OEM if possible. Any an all recommendations are appreciated.

Funny you found a Walker muffler (I worked at their only aftermarket facility in the USA for 22 yrs), Any ways if you do buy these. You can take a hack saw or Sawsall and cut the end 4 places (2 cuts) about 1/2-3/4" deep this will allow the pipe to compress... This actually done with machines for slip fitting joints but not all sizes are done this way.
oliver2-44 10,717 #4 Posted April 23, 2020 @dells68 recently bought and put some mufflers on his D. Hopefully he will chime in here on what he bought and did.

Right there Jim. I found a set on eBay that we’re NOS Nelson mufflers with 1” pipe fittings on each end. I think they were a universal muffler, but they are close to the size - slightly smaller - to the originals. I didn’t want to go to Lowe’s with Corona going around, so I used some 1” pipe conduit I had around and welded it to the original elbow and extended the tip below the grille with the same pipe. Sounds really good. Best option is to just search eBay. I did see some Onan generator mufflers for RVs that would work well too I think.
ebinmaine 72,676 #6 Posted April 23, 2020 Those look similar in size and shape to the Cub mufflers that are popular as mini stacks. Just have the inlet and outlet going the same direction. Nice-looking work there Dell.
pfrederi 18,670 #7 Posted April 24, 2020 From experience you need to block off the end of the exhaust pipe and drill a bunch of holes on one side of it like the original. Other wise you will have 2 brown circles in your grass anywhere you stopped with the engine running for more than a couple of seconds....I was filling in a trench with my FEL right after I put on some very similar B&S mufflers. Circle after circle in the grass along the side of the trench where i stopped to line up an dump the bucket in to the trench. Didn't show up for a day or so and it took me a bit to figure it out at first I though I had a hydro leak or something.
pfrederi 18,670 #8 Posted April 24, 2020 First picture is an original muffler second is how I fixed mine up. No more burn marks in the grass....
