meadowfield 2,758 #1 Posted April 9, 2020 Bendy has had a good innings, and taken everything thrown at it. However today whilst moving heavy loads of wet clay. Maybe 1/2 ton a load. I backed up to tip and the handbrake couldn’t hold the weight. As it rolled I jumped off and we tried to grab a tyre. No chance, I screamed as I watched it slip into the gill. The trailer stopped it pretty dead as it folded. Everything stopped and things didn’t look half as bad as they could have been! We pulled it out with the big tractor and it’s just twisted in the middle and the drive chain is now very slack. lucky escape and I’d never have thought the handbrake would be it’s downfall... 1

Lee1977 7,224 #3 Posted April 9, 2020 I don't trust the hand brake on my Wheel Horses. I got to where unless it's level ground I shut it down and leave it in gear.
19richie66 17,655 #4 Posted April 9, 2020 That could have ended a lot worse. Glad to see you came out of it ok. Metal can be straightened or replaced. People not so much.

Mickwhitt 5,138 #9 Posted April 9, 2020 Now that looks like a repair job! Is the chassis twisted? What is the brake like on that model? Similar to my C125 with a brake band around a cast hub on a gear shaft? I had my band reclined and it's pretty good. Mick south Yorkshire

pfrederi 18,714 #12 Posted April 9, 2020 Any Band brakes are notoriously weak in reverse. My 6000 lb Case DC3 has them. Scary trying to stop her if she is rolling backwards down hill.
rmaynard 16,372 #13 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Makes me think that I may have to include a disclaimer in the box with my brake linings. Although parking brakes haven't come a long way since the first ones showed up on Wheel Horses, I think about my 701 with no parking brake at all. You must stop the engine and engage the transmission to hold it. My 875 only has a parking brake pawl inside the hydro transmission, which on a good day really isn't much of a hold. As @Lee1977 said. "shut it down and leave it in gear". But then hindsight is always 20/20. Glad you escaped with no human injuries, and only minor injuries to the horse. meadowfield 2,758 #14 Posted April 23, 2020 thanks for the kind words guys... Bendy has been parked for the last few weeks. I really need to sort out the bent bits, but feeling a little down still. The brake band could probably have been tighter, so thats the next step! also next time I'm backing downhill and tipping a big rock might help.

Scary trying to stop her if she is rolling backwards down hill. This is also true of some drum brake designs. If both shoes pivot at the top or bottom there will always be one that is self energizing. If one pivots at the top and one at the bottom, like some old cars, they will be extremely touchy in one direction and near useless in the other.
