Skwerl58 766 #1 Posted March 11, 2020 Went by the local Rural King and they had the -20 Windshield Washer fluid for $1.49 per gallon so I brought home eight gallons. Already had two gallons from when I added fluid to my turf tires this winter. Added 5 gallons per rear tire by using the self filling tire suction method. Posting this as a reminder to anyone that needs ballast now is the time to look for the reduced price -20 Windshield Washer fluid. Cost per tire is less than $8.50 if using around 40 pounds per tire. 1
Pullstart 67,078 #2 Posted March 12, 2020 Nothin’ better than fluid filled tires for traction and weight!
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #3 Posted March 12, 2020 Is this method best in tube tires? l am interested in how to fill them with fuild.

I personally would only do it if I had tubes in my tires. No tube you’re inviting rust to form. Even though we don’t use chloride solution anymore, water based products can be pretty corrosive.
oldredrider 2,553 #5 Posted March 12, 2020 Yeah right Dell! Rust is your favorite color! Probably your favorite flavor too. 1
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #6 Posted March 12, 2020 Agreed. Seems like your inviting rust to destroy your rims and make it harder to remove the tire from the rim .

Rust with a little boiled linseed oil on it buddy! As for taste, yup I’ve eaten enough to form a rust bucket in my gullet!
Achto 29,433 #8 Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) I just pulled the tires off from a GT that had auto antifreeze inside for ballast. I have no idea how long these tires were mounted on the rims with the antifreeze inside. I can tell you that this tractor sat for a long time with out running. The rims had little to no rust on the inside. If the rim is completely covered in fluid it will be less likely to rust. Think of a wooden or steel pier in the water, they do not decay below the water line they decay at the water line where they are constantly subject wet & dry conditions. My loaded tires are all tubes, but have used auto anti-freeze. Great point about full vs wet and dry!
oldredrider 2,553 #10 Posted March 12, 2020 Important to note; antifreeze contains rust inhibitors. Washer fluid does not.
953 nut 60,372 #11 Posted March 12, 2020 I have always used RV Antifreeze and filled the tire with an adapter and a little pond pump.
Skwerl58 766 #12 Posted March 12, 2020 I researched this and decided on the -20 Windshield washer fluid. I read pros & cons and I hope that it does not eat up the wheels. If it does I will let you all know. I was tired of mashing my fingers on the wheel weights and might still use them at times. I use my tractor for plowing, mowing and some hauling. Man, how I love my Wheel Horse and our discussions about them!
