Kohler 12 throttle moving

Recommended Posts

RT WH416H

Hi, Im on my 4th Wheel Horse and got a great 12 hp Kohler with low hours. Its a 312 classic with the older style Kohler, not the OHV, probably right before the change.

The throttle at higher speed eventually moves down and I have to re-adjust up to speed. Any suggestions on how to fix? Thanks!

does the cable move easily ? is there a friction mounting point that you can increase ? i added a return spring  to the carb lever spot that helped mine hold its setting. after doing that i made the change to the other two horses, no more throttle creep. pete

All our horses are older.

Is this a sliding cable like an older C series?

Perhaps there's a rivet at the friction pivot point that could be squeezed?

You need to tighten up the rivet in the dash throttle control or replace the rivet with a bolt and nylock nut so the tension can be adjusted.

The faster the engine runs to more pressure the governor exerts on the throttle cable trying to slow the engine down. You need to match that pressure with the throttle cable.

I use a bolt with about a 1/4" of shank that is not threaded. That way none of the pivoting parts are on the sharp threads which would cause wear. You will need to add flat washers as necessary so the nut does not run out of threads. Cut off the threads not needed. After assembly you can reach in there with two wrenches to adjust the tension needed.

I've had good luck doing this with both my tractors.  Just use a pair of vise grips to squeeze on both sides of the rivet, and tighten it a little at a time until it holds nice and tight, not too tight or your throttle won't want to move at all.  And make sure your cable is lubed.

The bolt solution should work if you can't get the cable to stay put by just tightening the rivet.

For Sale NOS M12S Short Block, still in the original box.  I bought it pre-emptively when Kohler was phasing out the Magnums.  Thought I would have it on hand if one of mine needed it, or maybe I would find a tractor with a busted rod for cheap.  Neither of those things happened, the darn things just keep running.

Part number 77 522 35, probably built in late '05, it's the combination replacement kit Kohler made to fit WheelHorse or Gravely, machined to bolt directly into the Gravely transaxle, but also has spacers to mount WheelHorse PTO clutch/brake.  Also has a bunch of gaskets and seals packed with it, probably all you need to install it.

And it's heavy, so it's not practical for me to ship.  Buyer arrange to pick up near Elida OH, I can lift it about knee high to help load.

Asking $800 or might consider trade for a good center mount grader blade.

Tractor features Kohler 16hp cast iron engine, gently used 42" deck, concrete wheel weights, tire chains, new Chinesium carburetor, fuel lines and filter, new air filter, 2 new fwd/rev cams.  A starter,  some new gaskets, and miscellaneous parts.  New drive belt and all the belt idler assemblies.  Engine runs but smokes.  Great restoration candidate or a spare engine for you pullers out there.  Call, text or email for a private showing.   No offers considered unless made in person.  Buyer responsible for transportation.  Many more pictures to send to interested persons.

My 312 hydro has the 12hp kohler motor,It has 3 wires white, purple and orange coming out from the stator area but the orange is not hooked up.The stator test around 40 volts ( multimeter test) but the battery is not charging. The regulator is cheap but new (not OEM).My question is the orange wire, what is it for? If I should hook it up? If yes then to what should it be run to?Battery  +?.  My regulator test was a failure but the tractor runs fine besides de-charging.Im searching for alternative reasons for the regulator not working other than its no good.Like cleaning and refitting all ground connections, cleaning and refitting the battery terminals and connecting wires. Is it posable the ignition switch is the wrong one or is failing at one or more poles?   Thanks for any help

Husband wants some advice… lol.  So we did an engine swap today on two suburbans because we could not get the one engine to spark all the time to get it running!  The engine ran last year before parking for the winter sleep…. Points were changed out for new the engine was cleaned to make good contact has new spark plug new coil condenser we even switched out the fly wheel today thinking maybe the magnet was weak…. Advice???   It would where are you out yanking on the recoil five or so times and maybe only get the points to fire twice if you’re lucky..  checked the gap and pull again… same thing over and over!  Thanks in advance!
