engines do. They do have points and condenser in them, and looks like aftermarket coils are available

for them. If they are the later engines with the coils outside the flywheel stuff is available. 

Won't find to much for pistons and rods other than the standard stuff. If one looks long enough may find

some oversize pistons and rings at a price. I just did one of these for my Lawn Ranger a couple of years

ago. It was an HH60 I believe off a Troybilt tiller.

that is good news about the points and condenser type ignition, I do have a oh16 and it is designed with the electronic ignition, I will have to do a HEI conversion on it someday to get it running.

Try drilling a small hole in the middle of the case to try and get some lube down in there. You will not be able to split the  cases with the pin in. Some guys report using an air hammer on it works. I always try and get the tranny piece loose before I saw as I know then it will hammer out. Slot hitch remains come out in the press then. I was lucky the hitch piece you have in your picture I was able to get that free enough to remove the sawn off pin ends.  I did think about drilling a hole like you just suggested I had to do that on an old horse trailer latch years ago.  I am glad you mentioned that I think I will give that a go I hate the idea of trying to support everything and maneuver the entire trans-axle into position.

I wish I had thought of this before I cut my hitch pin off I wonder what would have happened if I had welded a big nut to the end of the pin and used an impact wrench to rock it back and forth to maybe get some movement on it? maybe?

Those hitch pins can be stubborn. I've drilled a couple out. Beggar to do when still in situ, but can be do if your careful.

Old slow poke here finally got the hitch pin out, wound up drilling through it and finishing it off with a chisel to get the thin remains on the shaft out.  Opened the case and am not to disappoint at this time with what I see.  But I am on my union break so tomorrow get it cleaned up and see how good it really is.  Sure is such a satisfying sound when you crack open a cast iron case!

I also picked up a 656 last fall. It had the engine replaced with a Kohler K161. No electric

starter. Not done much with it other than getting it running. Checked transmission and gear

oil was clean.

Well a Craigslist deal to good to pass up provided an almost new Honda 9 horse gx270 engine from a pressure washer that got frozen recoil start, will need to paint the tank and tin red but it will work for now!

Well I thought I posted an update but aparantly I did not save it!  Anyway I got my parts for the transmission all bearings, a gasket and the 2 ND 3 Rd gear, I pu it all back together, I also pulled off my steering wheel.  I used a bearing splitter and a two leg gear puller and a hose clamp to hold the legs inplace on the splitter bolts.  Took some doing but got it off.

 My bearings and the second third gear car in the mail yesterday so today I rebuilt the transmission then pulls the steering wheel so I can disassemble the rest of the tractor to clean it up and fix any other issues I find.  To pull the wheel I used a small bearing splitter and a harbor freight two left puller with a hose clamp at the bottom to keep things in line till I got pressure on it.  I had sprayed it with penetrator oil a couple times over the past week.  Once o got pressure on it and tapped on the big bolt I finally got it to move and come off.

1. Got hubs off the axles, Check that box

2. Hitch pin removed to split transmission. Check that box.

3. Pull steering wheel.  Check that box.

Excellent! That Honda will work well. They're good engines.

I'' be interested to see if that Honda pressure washer engine has a straight shaft, I had a mid-90's pressure washer and when the pump died I pulled the good engine only to find it had a tapered shaft.  Hope you have better luck than me!

If it is tapered, could a tapered shaft adapter be used?

I had to go look again but it is a 1 inch shaft as far as I can tell, it does have a thicker part right next to the block.

You could check it with a set of calipers, but it certainly doesn't look tapered to me. Probably has 1 1/8" close to the block and 1" for the rest.

1 inch shaft and you are correct 1 1/8  on the stepped up part. I just dug out my calipers.

And with that, you are right, with all the help and info offered  here, your project will go easier...great guidance  here!

Good luck with your project...i have 2 techy's...both on  1973 snowblowers---one luckily even a WH, lol; 7 and 8hp, respectively---and will just add that if you can get them running smoothly, they are awesome little motors.

I hope you have good luck with getting 1 or more running, m'self😉
