pfrederi 18,714 #203 Posted January 10, 2020 I do not think it matters much any more. Even the "Name " brands Firestone carlisle etc are all made in China now

But I just do an internet search and buy whatever is least expensive.

Mr Magoo 226 #206 Posted January 13, 2020 Ever open up a wheel and find this? Nasty stuff! I knew something was up by the smell coming out of the valve when Iet the air out. Friends don’t let friends use fix-a-flat! 1 1

Decided to go ahead and strip the wheel and repaint it since I have it all apart.

Pullstart 67,042 #210 Posted January 15, 2020 Not sure what you have set up for stripping (paint), but an E-tank is simply the way to go! A little water, a little washing soda, an anode and a battery charger (add battery if said charger is “smart”) and you’ll be cooking down to bare steel in no time, with almost no work! 2

I have one of those I made a long time ago. I do not use it to remove paint though, usually just the rust. I use Aircraft Remover for the paint. Anymore I use Evapo-Rust to get rid of the rust. I prefer it to the electrolysis set up.

Why do you prefer Evapo-rust to electrolysis?
Mr Magoo 226 #213 Posted January 15, 2020 I made a basket out of expanded metal and put it in a storage container. 1
Pullstart 67,042 #214 Posted January 15, 2020 How long did the expanded metal last? My anode from 1/8”x4” strap is getting pretty flimsy!

It is expensive, but the Evapo Rust can be used over and over again. The washing soda is a little had for me to find sometimes. I have ordered it online. I also can let a part sit in the Evapo Rust and forget about it. I don't really like running the electrolysis unit without me being there. You really are not supposed to run this indoors since it produces hydrogen gas and I have an attached garage. It is no quicker than the Evapo-Rust and you still have to do some wire brushing afterwards.

ebinmaine 72,990 #217 Posted January 15, 2020 Does the evapo rust remove grease oil and paint like if I wanted to soak a bunch of old nuts and bolts?
Mr Magoo 226 #218 Posted January 15, 2020 I just noticed that in that picture I have the piece hanging by a piece of stainless filler rod. Don't do that. The stainless leaches out hexavalent chromium which is not good for you at all.

The evapo rust does not remove the paint which is why I use it sometimes. I always try and remove the grease first. I would do this for either method actually. Mr Magoo 226 #220 Posted January 15, 2020 So I figured I would show you all my paint set up. I have built this paint booth in my garage in several different sizes depending on what I have been working on. Right now it is 60"x60"x80" tall. I have had it as big as 8' long when I was painting one of my larger telescope tubes. In that case I use a rotisserie rig I made to spin the tube while I paint. Makes the paint come out smooth as glass. A rotisserie would be good for the wheels too. There are two 20" box fans framed in. The one in the back has two 20"x20" furnace filters stacked on top of each other for the exhaust. The one in the front is used for relief air and just has one filter to break up the air currents. If I did not have the relief air fan, the one in the back pulls enough air that it would collapse the whole thing. I run the exhaust on Hi and the makeup air on low. I have a big sheet of cardboard on the floor to protect my garage floor. It is sheathed in inexpensive clear plastic drop cloth. The clear ceiling lets light through from the lights on the ceiling and I don't need any other light in the booth. The door opening is made from a clear shower curtain. I hot glued magnets to it and the frame and it basically closes itself right up when released. The door opening is by means of a zipper. It is called a Tarp Zipper. It has two adhesive strips on each side of the zipper. You just stick it on, open the zipper and then cut down the center with a utility knife. I got mine at Menards.
Mr Magoo 226 #221 Posted January 15, 2020 Here are the wheels painted. I got lazy and left the one tire on because I did not want to mess with the tube inside. The paint I used is Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy and the color is Biscuit. It is a little lighter maybe than the original, but not far off. Better than white I think. They have the paint in white too if you want that. This paint dries really hard. They say it is an indoor application, but I have been using it for years on my telescopes with no trouble. Here in Indiana our humidity is pretty bad in the summer. I have had water literally running down my telescope tube and it has not hurt the paint at all. I have also had it completely covered in frost in the winter and no problems.
