Stepney 2,311 #1 Posted September 23, 2019 Hello, all. I repowered my GT-1848 with an 80s era K321 14hp Kohler. I know the engine came from a 416-8, but I never saw the tractor too closely. I know it did have the little 'indicator lights' on the dash. As for the year, specific model number, etc.. no idea. Whatever the matter. I'm rewiring it for a battery ignition keyswitch, and I need it to charge. My question is about the stator and plug on the engine. The GT used a B&S engine with a low output stator and just a diode for charging. I know some later WH's used this system too. No rectifier, just a diode. Engine numbers are as follows: K341s. Spec. 60440. Serial 1601345504. By the numbers, could anyone tell me if this uses the 15amp rectifier, or is it the 3 amp type with a diode, and a separate coil for the headlights? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,441 #2 Posted September 23, 2019 The K321S-60440 came from a 1986 414-8 model 31-14K801. It will have the 3 amp charging system with diode and battery ignition. The 2nd stator winding powers the lights. https://www.partstree.com/models/k321-60440-kohler-k-series-engine-made-for-wheel-horse-14hp-10-4kw/ignition-tp-691-b-3/ This diagram should work for you. Stepney 2,311 #3 Posted September 23, 2019 As always, thanks Garry!
Stepney 2,311 #4 Posted September 23, 2019 However, after studying it a bit.. a new question. In the photo it seems to show a diode right on the engine. Is it actually integral, or does it belong somewhere else in the wiring? Just trying to order the bits I need to get this thing working correctly. My old JD had the diode up at the key switch. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,441 #5 Posted September 23, 2019 The diode is usually near the connector you show in the photo with your 1st post. Pinch the plastic tubing and see if you can feel it if that is the wires going into the engine. Garry
Stepney 2,311 #6 Posted September 23, 2019 Right again. Yep it was in the tube. Cant find it listed in the diagrams anywhere to get a part number. So with any luck it's good. No electronics places around here anymore, or I'd just spin down to the old radio shack.. You don't happen to know the values of the diode, do you?
