I won't need to aim for a low RPM on this one so I'll base the pulley sizes or chain gear sizes on available space and available parts.

I don't have that decided yet. Likely I'll stay fairly close to 1:1 on the input side.

The engine pulley and transmission pulley are from the old 1267/8 speed project that I took apart and sold.

Those are both 4". 

With a direct connection and the size of the tires I have it would have been up around 10.5, 11 MPH.

That would be cute about once a year on level flat hard ground but overall pretty useless to me so I will likely slow it down by putting the gearbox at 2/3 output versus input.

Rated Max HP is 20. 

Some similar gearboxes are used on 22 HP machines.  

 

I can't find a Rated Max RPM. 

This box is used on multiple machines over the years that appear to have a VERY close to 1:1 ratio with the engines at 3600 RPM. 

 

I don't know what the actual Duty Cycle is but I'm not in the habit of keeping any of my tractors or other machinery running more than necessary whether at home or work. 

Since this gearbox is designed for and used on mower decks up to 20, 22 HP and 60" wide I'd be comfortable figuring it's got a good strong constitution. Likely the original intent was to mow large areas. 

That takes time. 

More time than I'd ever have it running.

I'm thinking a good way to mount this unit would be to hang it directly under the engine with both shafts parallel. 

The drive would need to be on both sides of the steering shaft. 

#60 chain drive would solve that.  

The output pulley would be under the forward step mount rod where the brake and clutch pedals would normally attach. 

Using a set of idler pulleys could help relocate the belt UP and back towards the original transmission input.

Me too. I realized that these are the belts that drive the overhead camshafts on my car engine.

You planning on a belt tension type clutch between the engine and transmission?  

 

With the 90 gearbox mounted under the engine with the input shaft parallel to the crankshaft, you could consider a disk type clutch on the crankshaft or the gearbox input shaft.  I am assuming the engine will be mounted to put the crank fore and aft and centered in the frame.

Standard Wheelhorse type clutch. .. but between transmission and gearbox output.

I was figuring to put a direct connection from the engine (above the frame) to the gearbox input  ( below the frame).  

 

The belt(s) would go down the middle of the frame and surround the steering shaft which would be just above the gearbox.

Thanks for the walkthrough Eric. Really interesting to see and hear what your plans are for it. Will be a pretty capable machine when it's finished.

Any plans to put a 3 point on it? I think it would greatly improve the usability of the Colossus.

I can't say as I have ANY specific plans for the build other than the desire to have a Big Wheel tractor and use the Kohler 23 HP in a practical machine.  

 

Many different things could be accomplished given the right setups.

I figure it goes right along with the whole theme by age, size, shape etc. 

Should be a good front for the big Twin Kohler. Plenty breathable for the air cooled engine. 

Also, able to see the engine behind it and still be a great centerpiece of itself.

Be neat to find (or 3D print?)  a Mack Bulldog base as the original was part of the radiator cap.  That's what my tattoo is on my right forearm.  

 

But... remember... I do already have the awesomeness of the Colossus figure in 3D.
