FarmboyFresh 69 #1 Posted August 30, 2019 Alright friends.. I got the bug.. so here are two options for purchase this weekend and i would welcome your input on what is the better buy and why. I have my own opinion but as a newbie i'd be more than happy to hear your thoughts. Thank you in advance guy told me the first one is a '66 656 and is asking $300 the other one in the video and the other attached file is a '79 and comes with the belly mower and the plow attachment for $400 79 Wheel Horse Vid.mp4 79 Wheel Horse

ebinmaine 73,016 #3 Posted August 30, 2019 I don't even have to think about it Get the 79 as long as it runs it's a bigger heavier more capable machine and you've got two implements with it. Even if it needs work it's just a better value. 10

Pullstart 67,092 #5 Posted August 30, 2019 The 656 in my opinion wins in cool factor, but not practical. Without a belt guard, and a non-factory engine option, who knows how many times the gears have been grinded to shift the poor thing! That C series is a beast of a machine and well worth the coin with the accessories. 5

Lee1977 7,232 #9 Posted August 30, 2019 79 I have had a 77 for 42 years they don't come any tougher. Take good care of it will last a lifetime. 3 1
Achto 29,433 #10 Posted August 30, 2019 My vote is with the rest of the gang. The '79 hands down. Too many Frankin add on's on the 656. 1 1
Herder 2,355 #11 Posted August 30, 2019 I have to agree, the 79 C series is the way to go. A real work horse. If there's some money left over buy the other one too. 1 1 1
Ed Kennell 42,210 #12 Posted August 30, 2019 Buy the '79 C for a worker and he may throw in the '66 for fun. 1

FarmboyFresh 69 #14 Posted August 30, 2019 Yeah the 66 guy said he was firm on the $300 because the tires he claims were $240... The '79 guy said he's got over $2000 into it and just had the tranny and motor rebuilt!!!! Thanks everyone, going to the sale tonight and crossing my fingers nobody snached it up since yesterday. My old man sent me the pics and video. I told him to have them hold it for me but he had already left by the time i got the messages. Have a wonderful Weekend folks!! 2
Stepney 2,354 #15 Posted August 30, 2019 As with the others, the 1979 all the way. I am partial to the older, more elegant designs.. but that '66 is looking pretty tired. That 79 will do you right and you can actually use it. 1

Stike 204 #17 Posted August 30, 2019 I have to agree the 79 is the best bet, I'm working on a 79 c161 eight speed as I type this and as usual I am very impressed with how well built these horses were, very strong and easy to work on, and this site has all the info you will ever need. 2
FarmboyFresh 69 #18 Posted August 30, 2019 Guy changed the oil annually and every year would take the deck off and clean and repaint it. Turns out he was some sort of developer/designer for Toro. Threw in two sets of chains for the tires and was happy I was excited to get my hands on it. Called my dad after the last post and he went and wrote the guy a check. I'll be picking up And trailering home tonight or tomorrow depending on when I can get on the road. As always, you guys are the best! Thanks for the info! I'll post up pics when I get my hands on er! 👍👌🔥 4 2

Tractorhead 9,212 #20 Posted August 31, 2019 Good luck with you purchase. btw, i‘m also for the 79. Why? Because of belly feeling after just seeing the Pics. important i found, it has to fireup and run easily. 1

clueless 3,266 #24 Posted August 31, 2019 You got the right one . Being new to this, a little advice, when they say they got X amount of money in it, especially $2000.00 in it and no paper work to back it up take it with a grain (grains) of salt. Same goes for rebuilt engines, and trans. Welcome to the madness.

Most of find the same with paint covered horses.... 3 years ago I had 1. It was apparently lonely. We now have 4 that run and drive, 2 more projects in the works... And a decent sized parts pile. You're in good company at least... 1 2
