Found a donor K241 10 horse engine with a starter generator system for a fair deal. Will it fit in my 1980 c-85 wheel horse? My c-85 had a k181 in it with an electric starter.

Will i need to change out any parts for the donor engine to work and the K241 is from a cub cadet.

Pullstart

I believe the 10 horse will bolt right up, as the 8 horse is on a riser plate.  With a wiring swap, you should be smooth sailing on the swap.  :text-welcomewave:

Pull start what is required on a starter generator system that’s different from a electric starter system.

The oil pan from the Cub won't have the bolt holes in the bottom to bolt to the :wh: frame  on the PTO side, but that can be handled with a couple "J" Bolts. With the Cub Cadet counter clockwise Starter/Generator being on the PTO side of the engine you may have a problem aligning the drive belt for the transmission unless you put the clockwise S/G unit and pulley on like was used on nearly everything but the Cubs.

If you replace your ignition switch with a # 103-990 switch and follow this basic wiring diagram you should be fine. Your safety switches are not included in the basic drawing, but need to be added. The generator light can be omitted and a volt meter attached to the Ignition Switch "A" terminal. Also, a 30 amp fuse should be added to the yellow wire from the voltage regulator to ignition switch "R" terminal and a 15 amp fuse prior to the light switch for safety.

Lots of good information in this post. In post # 14 there is a good color coded layout with safety switches done by @BOB ELLISON for a "C" series. If you decide to do this swap please ask questions as you go along so we can help you have a successful swap.

Tuneup

Welcome! I grew-up in Morris County and lived in Warren County for a while. You're where it really is the Garden State. Good luck!

If the 10 hp doesn't have the right oil pan it will not bolt up to your shaker engine mount. The C-85 has the isolator plate. If you can find a kohler 8 hp K or magnum they will fit the mount fine even a 7 or 6.25 hp kohler will fit.

I want to go with the swap. I read the diagram and have a couple of questions. I can reuse the voltage regulator on my tractor correct? what you mean by generator light, my tractor only has a amp meter. If I get the engine with a cub cadet generator where can I find a oem wheel horse generator? Do you have pictures of what a K241 with a starter generator in a wheelhorse.

For the most part this is not going to be a simple swap.

You can not use your voltage regulator because the CC K241 has no charging system. The early Wheel Horses had a light on the dash that would glow if the generator was not putting out more voltage than the battery.

The Starter/Generator from most other brands that had a Kohler 10 or 12 HP engine will work for you. You can find them on :techie-ebay: or from used garden tractor suppliers. I would suggest you call Lincoln at A-Z Tractor, he is great.  https://a-ztractor.com/. You will also want a belt guard for the S/G belt. Here is a picture of a K 241 with S/G.
