A-51 dies when engaging blades

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, new to the forum, but not new to owning a Wheel Horse. I picked up an A-51 model a couple days ago. Probably paid way too much ($200) first had an issue of keeping the motor running but after pumping out the fuel and putting in Non-ethonal gas it purrs along just fine, EXCEPT, when I engage the blade. Any thoughts or ideas of why this happening? Thanks in advance

It has a safety switch? Guess I'll have to see if I can find a manual for this model.

WHX??

You mighta paid a bit too much as they go for 50-150 around here but that one appears to be pretty rust free. . There is a switch by the deck engagement lever that looks like it belongs more on the door of a refrigerator than a mower. That might be your culprit. Does the engine kill or just run rough?

This is on a A-81 but should be similar.  The bracket is missing and I just have it taped closed.

Heres a wiring diagram, rest of the manuals should be here, let us know if you have trouble finding them.

Oops, don't know what I did there, anyways, no switch to be found and no switch on seat as well, though I did find this, looks like someone may have removed the switch. And the engine just dies when engaging, doesn't even sputter

It looks like that empty plug should be jumped, then try it!  :text-welcomewave:

Okay, figured it out, I obviously was trying to engage the blades too fast, working fine, just mowed the front yard :) thanks for the help

It looks like the other half of the plug is under that electrical tape and jumped.  My bet is that it had come loose and fiddling with it knocked it back into contact. If it happens again yank that tape and redo the jumper.

Fer sure Jim... I'd like to find a early one someday. The cats meow for us collectors would be to have an early RER an early eighties vintage and a Toro one. I pulled the deck off my 81 for a refresh and easier to get on a trailer for shows.  I had to take to a show where :wh: was the feature just to have one ther. Sure is nice for pulling tubs around and fun with the grandkids. Get the deck back on and be handy for close quarters trimming.  Even the Missus likes riding it!

Jim, Now you are making me miss my granddaughter, LOL Can't wait to give that little girl a ride on my 51!  I noticed on the 81 it has a grated cover over the motor, I wonder if my 51 is suppose to have that. Hard finding photos online of the a-51.

Years back I had a :wh: RE-66 which was the 1966 version of your mower. I had to pull it out onto the driveway to engage the clutch for the blades, 6 HP for a single 32" blade wasn't enough to get it going under a load!
