mikeeyre74 289 #1 Posted July 31, 2019 Working on a Kohler magnum eight horse power. The stator puts out 24 V AC or so and I am getting 12.4 at the battery. When I turn the tractor off the voltage stays pretty much right there. I suspect it is not charging, but I’m just not that familiar with these newer engines that don’t have regulators. How do you check for charging on these things other than the usual method at the battery? That just seems weak...how does the regulation system work on these ones? pfrederi 17,129 #2 Posted July 31, 2019 Probably an unregulated 3 amp system. if the battery is a bit weak it will take a long tome to get it charged up. Magnum Manual has a series of stator tests. Initial test requires fully charges battery and you should get 12.5 volts at 3000 rpm.
mikeeyre74 289 #3 Posted July 31, 2019 Ahh. Ok. That’s pretty much what I’m getting then. I just noticed that the lights work, but they are dim at idle and bright at full throttle. So I guess that means it probably is charging? Just slowly?
pfrederi 17,129 #4 Posted July 31, 2019 (edited) No the lights run on AC of a different part of the stator if you notice they do not work at all with engine off no battery involvement. Dim idle is normal. Edited July 31, 2019 by pfrederi
mikeeyre74 289 #5 Posted August 1, 2019 So... I don’t follow you. Is that a problem for me or no?
pfrederi 17,129 #6 Posted August 1, 2019 No problem, normal behavior, dim at idle bright at full throttle no light engine off.. The lights and battery charging have absolutely no connection
