For Your Consideration

Recommended Posts

adsm08

I just ran across this idea in another forum, put forward by someone who is admittedly on some good pills after surgery, but I thought it would be fun to bring up here.

So, Yugos, are they cars, or lawn tractors with custom body kits?

We have decided that the answer to the above dilemma is.....

Neither.

It is a boat anchor.

Well they say that the funny thing about a Yugo is that if you own one, you don't.

I was in Zagreb on a mission outreach last fall as a team leader.  It is an affluent city and there were many very cool exotic cars.  For those of you who keep up with geography, Zagreb is in the old country of Yugoslavia, home to that “whatever it is”!  Well, with free enterprise and capitalism has come an influx of cars from around the world. Guess what was all but missing?

Then one day I turned the corner and I said, “Dad quick, take a picture!” He said, “Of what?”  That Yugo of course!

Looks like he is lining up to race the vintage Citroen!!!  Speaking of the Citroen, I started looking around for “Kurt Henderson”...:ROTF:

You would have to fill it with lead or at least a bunch of old brake rotors.

Yugo's came with a tool kit. Their only value came if you took the kit out and sold it at a yard sale.

Now that's not fair. Parts of them were made of metal, so you could get $5 or $10 at the scrap yard for it.

I told this factoid to my honey this morning and her immediate response was that if it isn't a good boat anchor... Perhaps you could use it as a buoy?

I have to acknowledge that the Chevrolet chevette was not much.

However, that little 1.6 l 4 speed drivetrain was very close to indestructible. Several of us tried.

The Vega was a good car!! All you had to do was drive it for 40,000 miles, this is about where the engine would give up it's life. Then throw the 4 cylinder aluminum bore, cast iron head engine away. Then replace the engine with a nice small block V8 & you had a rocket on wheels :auto-layrubber:, until the body rusted off. '71 - '73 were the best looking Vega's IMO.

My first car was a 78. It put up with a lot of my teenage stupidity. 😁

I had a customer who was a field engineer for a natural gas company. He had a 76 Chevette that he used a a 4WD truck. He beat in it for 160,000 miles. Then he brought it to us and had us replace all of the suspension parts that were available. Who knows how long it went before he got rid of it.

My late father had a Yugo for a couple of years. I think it was the last car he owned before he was told to stop driving.
