81 B-82 Briggs (8 horse vertical shaft)

My B-82 Briggs is surging, almost to the point of dying, at idle. Anyone have experience with this issue and could/would point me in the right direction.

I'm not familiar with that particular engine but the most common cause of surging or governor hunting is the carburetor. It's either dirty or leaking in extra air. If you can smooth out the rpm by using the choke, that will indicate the carb is the problem . Probably time to pull off the carb and give it a thorough cleaning.

 Good explanation from my favorite youtuber [once you get past the antics that some ppl do not like]

Not just what to do but why. These engines commonly lose adjustment due to people undoing the settings [like I did] by mistake when doing other repairs.
