Jpbugeye 3 #1 Posted July 20, 2019 Hi guys, I recently got a 417a wheel horse that starts hard but runs well when started and runs poorly with the lights on and won't start after shutting off when it had been running..I am thinking the coil may be going , any other ideas? pfrederi 18,566 #2 Posted July 20, 2019 Have you checked you voltage while running??? Adding headlights to the electrical load may drop your voltage enough to interfere with the spark. Before you buy a coil test it. Between the small + and - terminals on the coil you should read 4-5 ohms. Between the two high tension terminals 9500-11500 ohms
Jpbugeye 3 #3 Posted July 20, 2019 Thanks for the reply, I can test it soon..I thought the fact that it won't restart when coil is hot and hard starting when cold also suggested a weak spark.

It may be a bad coil. Brace yourself if you have to buy a new one... Check out this thread about using a coil from a Harley Davidson....much cheaper
midpack 992 #5 Posted July 20, 2019 You look at the points, check the gap? Maybe a tune up would help. I dont know if a rectifier is an either works or it dont, but start with the small $$ stuff first.
953 nut 59,338 #6 Posted July 21, 2019 I had a similar problem on my 418-C (basically same tractor), With the fuel tank being located under the seat (low) and the fuel pump on top of the engine (two feet higher) if your fuel pump is marginal the fuel pressure will be low and it can take a long time for it to prime. I replaced mine with an electric low pressure pump mounted low on the frame and all of the problems went away.
