AHS 1,405 #1 Posted July 16, 2019 A C105 with a 42” rear discharge for $300! And it runs! And smokes, But there is some oil from the head gasket area. Bad head gasket? Warped head? how much can you shave the head on these K series motors? All the questions!🇺🇸🇺🇸
ebinmaine 62,336 #2 Posted July 16, 2019 Nice purchase! As to the Head shaving. That can be done with a piece of glass or known flat Steel and some sandpaper taped to the face of it. There are good videos about that available on YouTube. It is a bit time consuming but does work quite well.
ohiofarmer 3,155 #3 Posted July 16, 2019 (edited) If you do take off the head, do some other things while you are in there. Buy a Harbor Freight bore gauge and compare the diameter on the wrist pin side with the areas 90 degrees from the wrist pin. You really can not keep them from smoking if the cylinder is egg shaped. Also adjust those valves. It might be the thing to do before you pull the head just in case the valves are the source of the smoke. There is also a baffle thingy inside the valve cover that must be installed right side up to avoid that smoke. I am not sure if it CAN be installed wrong, but there are plenty of people here smarter than me who know the answer. Anyway, with previous owners making mistakes with wrenches, it falls on you to figure it all out. BTW,you killed at that price if the engine is sound Edited July 16, 2019 by ohiofarmer
953 nut 51,008 #4 Posted July 16, 2019 Prior to doing any disassembly I like to clean the engine well and run it to see where the leak really is. 2 hours ago, ohiofarmer said: must be installed right side up to avoid that smoke. I am not sure if it CAN be installed wrong, Yes it can be installed upside down! Please don't ask how I know this. 1

AHS 1,405 #11 Posted July 18, 2019 Oh, how much oil? 2.5 qts? I am used to doing the oil on my 312 small block! i need to do the tranny oil cause the shifter boot is ripped. 80w90, for the tranny?
tunahead72 2,329 #12 Posted July 18, 2019 Mmm... I think 2.5 quarts is too much. Check the owner's manual for your tractor if you have one (there's one here on RedSquare somewhere), I believe my 1981 C-105 only takes 1.5 quarts. 80W90 is fine for the tranny. pfrederi 17,027 #13 Posted July 18, 2019 Full size oil pans used when engine bolted to frame are about 2.5 ats. The Isolation mounts used on some C series like Black hoods used a smaller oil pan held less oil.
