C160 steering repair

Recommended Posts

What's everyone's go-to solution for worn steering gear teeth? The ones on my C160 are knife-edged and will "strip" past each other if you turn hard enough.

I'm sure I could weld them back up, but if anyone has a solution that isn't as involved, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

If you can't adjust the gears by adding or removing shims, I'd find a good used steering shaft from another C-series. There are usually plenty on eBay.

Lemme take a look in the parts pile. I may very well have one.... Yours for the price of freight.

I bet your steering shaft support block hole is egg shaped.

If the holes in the bearing block are worn, they can be bored out for bronze bushings.  The gear engagement can be tightened by adding shim to the horizontal shaft to move the fan gear to the rear, and the steering wheel shaft can be moved down by sliding the locking ring up on the shaft.

Eric, If you can find one, I'll take you up on that offer! Thanks!

Mike, there is a little play in the support hole, but not much.

Bob and Ed, thanks for the shim idea! I'll take a look at it if it stops raining and see what I can do.

A little play is all it takes to make the gear jump at the end. I have replaced at least a dozen of them. Hyd lift tractors like to crack the base. double check that.

Sorry for not getting back promptly!

Pictured are the steering gears on the C160. I figured I either needed to replace both gears or build some material back up on them. I can try shims, but I don't see that solving the problem long term, since the teeth are worn pretty badly. The picture makes the teeth look better than they really are since you're mainly seeing the outer teeth which obviously receive less wear.

The steering shaft hole is egg shaped. I pushed around on it rather than just turning the steering wheel and it's worse than I thought. I'll have to address that, since it's what ultimately caused the issue.

No apologies necessary.

Looks to me from here that your main issue is the lower fan gear.

If you replaced that and either bushed or replaced the lower mounting block you'd likely be doing ok.

Lemmme take me a look-see this afternoon..... I'm quite sure I have the fan gear... Maybe not the block.

I’m pretty sure I have a good lower steering arm from a 160.

If Eric can’t help pm me and I’ll dig it out.
