The Tuul Crib

Got the Husky out this morning because my next-door neighbor called me and said he had some trees down from the last storm on the farm. So I said sure I’ll bring my saw and ran around the corner. When I got there one of the trees was a straight tall Walnut about thirty feet long and

about a foot in diameter. I couldn’t resist it I’ve got at least 30 feet of straight 12 inch. Got one word for this....

Bowls!!!!  Alot of turnings!

Nice score!

My dad had a walnut come down the Friday of the show. It was bigger around, but not as straight. I pulled a coupe chunks to try and preserve and make lamps from.

I found something cool to do on a hot 90° plus day .  Had to pressure wash the pieces before I brought them in the house. Sure felt good to get wet !!

It's probably the lighting, it just looks like the background scenery, you, and the logs all came from different photos.

When you say "split the log"  do you mean cut it lengthwise? Or are you just looking for a more aggressive chain to cut those into smaller pieces?

Yes . I want to rip length wise then cross cut for bowl turnings

I'm kind of thinking your best bet is to find a local person with a portable sawmill. Around here they only get 25 or 50 cents a foot to cut.

Another option would be to do a search on YouTube or whatever for a hand chainsaw Mill using a 2 x 4 and the above-listed ripping chain by John. @wallfish

I have basically zero experience operating a mill of any size.

Can something like that be used to cut a log directly in half or do you need to remove a certain amount at a time? I was always under the impression that a lot of those had a 2" depth Max cut.

Eric,

Generally speaking I'd say that assumption is correct.

But then I stumbled upon this, so I imagine there are multiple possibilities if one is deadly serious about doing it own their own and willing to research the possibilities.

https://outermart.com/products/mophoto-chainsaw-mill-14-to-36-chain-saw-planking-milling-guide-bar-portable-aluminum-steel-chainsaw-mill-wood-lumber-cutting-builders-a?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3umL-_qP4wIVTJyzCh0ANAfZEAkYCyABEgKPE_D_BwE

Otherwise, I say load those logs up and take them to the nearest commercial sawmill and tell them what you want.

Voila!

I have found that the local Mills want nothing to do with trees that are cut down near the house because of potential metal objects in them when they saw them, I even had 3 fifty plus footers that were taken down 300 yards from the house, 2 pines and 1 hemlock and they sat for 2 years because I had someone who wanted them but never came to pick them up, so into the log splitter they went and are now destined for the outdoor fire pit.
