Charger 12 no spark

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We bought a charger 12 back in the winter months, and were trying to get it going.  The points and condensor have been replaced, new fuel, new spark plug, and now it has no spark. It is getting fuel, but we have adjusted the points, and still no spark.  It is a pretty original tractor, but is a kohler with a magneto setup.  Anyone out there ever have this issue and been successful with fixing it?? If not if we switched over to a coil, how do we get the battery to charge?

Have you tried cleaning the contact surfaces of the points? Even new ones can have invisible oxidation on them and won't make a ground connection when closed. There is a special point file but a metal nail file will polish them up. Not a good idea to use an abrasive paper unless it is crocus cloth. Drag strips of clean white paper through the contacts to clean them.

Can be changed to battery ignition. The 10 amp flywheel stator will still charge the battery.

The wire harness that is coming out from behind the fan shroud and laying a cross the top of the starter should contain 2 wires. These should produce AC power and should run to the outside 2 terminals on you voltage regulator. A wire should run from the center terminal on the regulator to a term on the ignition switch that is hot only in the on position.

Change it over to a coil it's pretty easy I had low spark issue for long time and now it starts up  soon as you hit the key

I have same tractor, a 69 charger 12, got tired of fooling with magneto, trigger etc. and switched over to points and coil. Thread on site will guide you through. need to remove plug from plunger for points and put push rod in block. Parts are readily available. Good info on Brian Miller site regarding how different systems work. If I can do it anybody can!
