Stampings on Block and Piston

Started tearing down the engine on my 68 Raider and first noticed the piston was stamped with an "A".

As I cleaned off the top of the block I noticed that the  block had been also stamped with an "A" between the intake and exhaust valves.

Is this something done at the factory? Or when it may have been serviced? or????

Believe it or not the bore is still within limits which I found as odd.  But when I broke down the transmission it was like new????

Any ideas?

I haven't seen an "A" in the 4 engines I've been into.  Others will be along with more experience than me.  Good to here the engine is still within spec and wonderful that you have an excellent transmission for your restore.

I think you are correct, probably marked so parts went back in the correct engine.

I seem to remember that having to do with a slightly bigger bore at the factory. Like using a .003+ piston or something. 

 

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe it's been bored? What does the bore show to be? I have seen unmarked oversize pistons before.

 

Seems silly that the factory would've stamped an A in the head gasket sealing surface. I'm going to guess it's not factory.

I started tearing down a second K301 and found the “A” stamp on the block between the valves.  Most be an inspectors mark from the factory.  The chances of the same rebuilder would be kinda slim since the engines came from different areas (as far as I know)
