Mint 416-8 update. You gotta hear this!

Recommended Posts

Dominator

Hi all, what a miserable day.  This was the weekend to pick up the mint 416-8 I have been talking about.  The seller and I had finalized the price last week,. I phoned him as asked yesterday to confirm that I was coming this morning, all was good.   After a 4 hour drive , thru pounding rains, I was able to see the tractor, beautiful machine.. I was then told the agreed price was no longer good as he had other ,higher offers.  A wasted trip, I learned the hard way that a mans word sometimes is just not good.  Still on the look.  Thanks all.  Dominator

That's a bummer. Not many people left that honor their own words. He would have gotten a ear full from me.

That sucks. When I bought my 416h as you see for $400 it was 150 miles away,I contacted the seller on a Sunday and told him I would be there Monday afternoon cash in hand.He agreed to the wait and I told him I wouldn't haggle over the price.Cash in hand but if it wasn't there when I showed up we were gonna dance in the driveway.I don't suffer jerks well. You keep your word!As it turned out this guy was a young kid who was thrilled I showed up with cash.He and his friends loaded it up on the trailer in the rain.Man your story sucks and I sure as hel# would have been hard to deal with.

Yeah that sucks ----

Maybe tooting my own horn here ... but heres a story of a sale I had. For a while I was rebuilding/refurbing metal tooling and I had a newly finished metal lathe listed on CL for $2500 and quickly got a bite, guy saying he'd be there the next afternoon. I told him it;d be here. Short time later get a call from a town some 300 miles away guy says he'd go $3000, I said no I'd made a deal already. First guy shows up as he said and as we are loading the other guy calls again and said he'd go $3500!! Geez! I paused a minute and told him no! Didnt take but a minute to figure I had a bird in hand and not in the bush.

I was happy and the buyer was crazy happy (It was a nice lathe) He called me 2 times later to brag on it and how proud he was of it. Good deal for both of us.....

I know this in modern time isn't a John Wayne western but I still believe your word should be your bond.Pacer you did the right thing and you know it.It really doesn't matter what  anyone else thinks you can sleep at night knowing you did the honorable thing.Kudos!

I would've knocked the guy out. He easily could've let you know over the phone before you left that the price had gone up. I've found that, for the most part, a persons word isn't worth anything nowadays.

After a 4 hour drive, I'd say I would have been just a tad put out :ranting:  :rant2:

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, another good reason to keep your eye on the classified section here and be patient,I would find it hard to believe that you may find a Red Square member that would pull a stunt like that, don't give up and be vigilant another one will find it's way home for you.

Exactly, men  .you are the kind of people I am used to dealing with.  A mans word is his bond and I would take a loss before defaulting on a deal.  It was a heated discussion to say the least, and he still did not realize that what he did was wrong.  Also out 500.00 for the trailer I bought to haul it home and he knew this.  He just figured I was there and would not leave and pay extra, he was wrong.  Thanks dominator

I am happy to report that though there are scum bags out there, there’s still good people left on this earth too!  Two weeks ago I found an add for a Wheel Horse non-running about 1-1/2 hours away from me and the price was one of those too good to be true deals.  I left him a message 41 minutes after it was posted, thinking “I’m too late and I know it, but I’ll get in line anyway”. I was the first caller in fact, this was Thursday about 3 in  he afternoon.  I told him I could be there mid morning Friday, but I have to stick around the house until my little niece shows up to hang out with us.  He called when I was in the shower about 7 am and left me a message.  Here we go, he’s going to accept a better offer or someone showed up with cash first, etc.  He just wanted to check that I was still coming because he had a lot of interest, and he said , “maybe I didn’t ask enough money for this thing,” but he’d stand behind his word if I was still coming.  Like @JAinVA, I made sure to tell him I was coming to pick it up with the cash he was asking, I wasn’t driving all that way just to look at it.  I made it by about 11 am, he had already pulled the listing from CL knowing that if I didn’t take it he could easily raise his asking price and get it.

We made the deal, loaded up, I invited him to this site and we shook hands and parted ways.  Like a real honored deal, both parties were honest and satisfied.  He was happy to know it was going to a good home and that we’re a :wh: family.

I think we've all got some good stories. I work through the week and it is getting harder and harder for me to get someone to hold something for me until Saturday. Sometimes it hard to even to get someone to message/call you back lol Sometimes I figure that is just that good lord telling me that I have enough projects lol

Found a bunch of Wheel Horse stuff down in VA couple of weeks ago on Craigslist. He had 314's and 315's plus all kinds of accessories. I was looking at a 42" SD deck of which he had eight. He sent me pictures of all of them, numbered and described. They ranged in price from $300 to $600. I had decided that I was going to get the $600 one since it was a 2006 and looked as though it had very few hours. However, I told the seller that I wanted to look at all of them before I made a decision. It was Easter Sunday and the seller said he would not be home until 6 pm, so my wife and I took a leisurely 4-hour drive around Northern VA until he was home. He showed me all of the decks but I told him I still wanted #8, the $600 one. I asked if he would give me any sort of discount. At that point, he said that after looking it over closely, he really thought it was worth more and he would either keep it for himself or raise the price to $750 if I didn't buy it. I saw what he was doing, justifying his asking price, and I have to admit I have done that myself. Then he said that since I had told him over the phone, subject to inspection, that it was the one I wanted, he would sell it to me for the agreed-upon price of $600. Now that's the right thing to do.

Very sorry to hear that, that situation sucks.  I imagine that nearly all of us have been there, i know i have.  As said, shame on him for coming to an agreement and backing out of it.  He would have gotten an ear full from me as well.  Its just bad character to go against his word.  FOUR HOURS?!! Wow.  He should told you about the other offers before you made the drive.  I am glad you didn't buy it, another will show up. I hope hes stuck with it.

I had a deal recently that was one of the most profound experiences i have had with a facebook/craigslist deal.  It was for a 4x4 ATV that was listed WELL below market value.  It had electrical issues so i couldn't hear it run, but knew i had to be the first on the spot or i wouldn't get it.  I caught the ad maybe 20 min after posting and got an address and a time.  When i showed up, there was already a truck in the driveway and someone looking at it.  The seller was the type that would give a bunch of people a place to be at the same time for a serious "first come, first serve" situation.  After giving the seller a piece of my mind (politely i may add), the other buyer cut in and said "Hey, do you have your phone on you? Lets see who contacted him first, and whoever that was gets the quad.  I've had this situation happen to me and dont want either of us to get screwed, i want to be fair".  I beat him to the punch by about 10 minutes.  He shook my hand and took off.  It was one of the most stand-up things i have seen someone do and i will be damn sure to do the same for someone if the positions were reversed.

Tuneup

Well, dang, this is the first time I have heard a good reason to get a data phone. Not good enough, but a good reason. Great story, thanks.

Oh, and original poster, my blood would have boiled. My brother once told me after I was escorted from a job many years ago (I quit that morning and he couldn't stand the sight of me - called him unethical, with evidence, to his face) that he could make a couple of calls. I knew what that meant. There is still meaning to the word family when you've grown-up in NJ but I never meant any harm to the guy - these people bathe in their own misery each day of their lives.

You'll find that tractor!
