Stepney 2,354 #1 Posted May 7, 2019 Hello, all. As some of you may know, some weeks ago I bought a GT-1848 WorkHorse with the 18hp opposed B&S engine. The engine promptly failed. I havn't had the time to tear it down, and as I have hardly even moved the thing, I want to stick another engine in and run it a good while, just to make sure nothing else is wrong. What I do have is a K241 from either a C100 or B100. And possibly a K321 from a 414-8. The WorkHorse has the engine mounted on a steel plate. From what I expect, the frame was drilled for K-engine mounts as they are more or less a 3-400 series WH. I suppose the best way to find out is to just try it, but currently I don't have a hoist and would need someone else to help lift the engine. So if it won't work.. I'd rather not put someone to the trouble. Would any of you happen to know if either of those engines would work OK? Sure it's less power, but I just want to assure the hydro is good, and mow a few times with it.
JAinVA 4,637 #2 Posted May 7, 2019 I don't have a GT 1848 to look at but it would be a good bet that the frame will accept the engines you have. The different frames from the 300/400/500 series I have are basically the same. They may have different bits bolted to them for different engines but the basic creature is the same.
pacer 3,177 #3 Posted May 8, 2019 I had a WH with a Briggs twin in it - Sorry I just cannot remember which model. One of the C's? I've gone through a LOT of horses, but it wasnt one of the GT's. But what I'm leading up to is that the Briggs was 'grenaded' and I had a nice K341 sitting here and as I recall it swapped over without a hitch. Made a dang nice tractor, so much so that it sold so quickly is probably why I cant remember it well.
Racinbob 11,938 #4 Posted May 8, 2019 There will be some fiddling but the Kohler will work fine and it's an easy swap. I would make sure you use a Kohler with the correct oil pan and not one that has a wobble mount. The B or C 100's will be correct. Not sure about the 414 but it would probably depend on the year I use a come-along fastened to the garage trusses to lift heavy stuff.

ebinmaine 72,728 #6 Posted May 8, 2019 @pullstart Good post. Maybe this would be and appropriate time to recommend a chain balls? I could check with BBT and see if she's available as well but we've been way past extremely busy.
