the motor is making a horible noise and i dont know what it is it happens roughly every 40 feet and when you idle it down it smooths right out

Have another condenser you can try? If not disconnect the one on there and try it.

so i swapped the condenser and it is still happening do you guys believe it is spark knock 

i plan on resetting the points gap tomorrow

could it be the coil?

That is either spark knocking or the carb is getting plugged and starving it for fuel - mine did the same thing the last time I mowed but haven't had the time to get out to fix the thing yet. That 16 needs a lot of fuel and the timing set correctly to be happy - look into doing the K series timing procedure with a multi-meter.

Generally - called "Static Timing" procedure.

Yeah. Don’t set the points with a feeler gauge. Static timing is the way to go.

My k341 was set a bit too far advanced and was running hot. My exhaust elbow and stack tip was cherry red hot. After retiming, she ran cooler and all was well in the world again. Use an ohm meter. You want the points to break contact at the same point that the “S” timing mark on the flywheel lines up with the pointer. Best of luck.

A good sign that your timing might be a fuzz off.
