Are you referring to the inside of the case?  I figured they came from the factory that way?

Those transmission halves would have been cast in a sand mold, after the metal is poured and cooled the parts go for shake out to remove the sand and sometimes a bit of sand will stay hidden to wreck havoc later.

Wheel horse went that extra mile by painting the internals with "Glyptal Enamel" there are more benefits to having the inside painted besides retaining any ;loose bits of sand left over after shake out.

Foundry's these days use vibratory equipment on the shake out line but you'll still see major mfg like Caterpillar still painting the internals on many of their castings.

They only coated the inside of the Hydro transaxles not gear drive ones.

In addition to "Glyptal Enamel" ability of sealing micro pores in a casting ( leaks and hidden micro sand ) the painted surface inhibits rust and  sheds oil to the sump where it belongs.
