Here are a couple of pics of that Craftsman I mentioned. It was a discarded rider with a blown 10 horse engine that was sitting next to a dumpster. I wanted it to have a 50's hot rod flavor and I was very happy with how it turned out.

I think Steve might have been referring to me saying the PO said it was a 50's tractor. Yeah, do have a lot of crap. My neighbors used to have a fit, but I wore them down. Now instead oif calling the city code enforcement, they just shake their head as the walk by. My father passed away last month and we are going to move out to their property and be closer to mom. It's 26 acres on a lake. I get  more room for crap and they may get someone that doesn't like to bring home junk. I prefer to say treasure over junk. A win win for everyone.

Ya, Rick, I was refering to what the PO said...thanks.  Anyway, that transmission is a Peerless and I think it is the 1400 series.  If your horse is or was an A-90 it would be a 1974.  A & B series horses used a smaller tire then the C & D series horses...and they do look original.

 So do you make a loop at the end of a rope or just a knot? After I check the compression, I may run down to the hardware store later and see if the have any pull rope kits and a spark plug.

Use a knot...cloth clothes line will work.

It is a two street neighborhood, but it is custom homes and a few of the neighbors like to stick their noses in other places. My parents place is out in the country where just about anything will fly. The only bad will be riding my bikes a mile down a dirt road getting in and out of where the house is. It can get treacherous sometimes when the sugar sand gets thick.

Here's a quick demo. The guy in this video obviously has his engine tuned very well and is showing off with only half a wrap of rope on the pulley. Feel free to wrap the rope around the pulley a few times.

I got 88 psi on three pulls. I should have bought more than three feet of cord. Even with it being dry and cold that's not bad, is it? I got only 80 psi the first time I tried, but forgot to open the throttle plate. Good news is it shocked the snot out of me, so it's getting good spark. 

BTW, my electric HF impact didn't work. It barely moved it and all it probably did was tightened the flywheel nut more.

 

I put the spark plug in and gave it a shot of carb cleaner, but I didn't get any action. I think I need a longer cord.

you have found the best site on the web for anything Wheel Horse related. Great job on the Craftsman custom, with those skills you could make a killer WH custom, and I for one think your tractor is a great candidate for it. No matter what you decide to do with it, you may have saved it from a scrapyard fate, and that's the main thing. We have some members here who have made some truly awesome creations out of WH tractors, this hobby is a great way to show off your individuality, I like them all, whether they're still in their work clothes like my C125, or fully restored models like my C141 will be someday, and even the customs. Here is one I saved a couple years ago that was destined for the scrapyard and decided to do a custom build since so many of the original parts were missing or hacked up by previous owners. It's still a work in progress, but I have been having a blast making it my own.

Thanks guys for the links to the all the customs. It's getting the juices flowing. This is just the project my soul has been waiting for and now that I see that it's not taboo, I'm looking forward to seeing what the heart mixed in with some brain cells can concoct. I'm a hot rod kind of guy, so I may look into different engine options(not Volvo), since this one is not original and I want ALOT more power than this will provide. What can this trans handle? If I go m//c engine, then I will need maybe an atv axle or come up with a jack shaft to transfer the drive line to the other side.

Can't say for sure, but there probably is a good reason you don't find the "Peerless" transaxle on anything but the lower horsepower . I would be on the lookout for a transaxle that is comparable with the engine you select.

The A-90 is considered a riding lawn mower, and the manual says it is not meant to have any ground engaging accessories.  That means, if you are going to soup this thing up, you probably want a different trans.  Don't throw out the Peerless, somebody here will want it.

My old Craftsman had a Peerless 5 speed with an 18 horse single. It would go pretty fast, but you may be right about looking for something else. I have a few shaft drive engines also if I can get a rear end from a UTV. Either route I go, I'll lose reverse. Maybe just find a horizontal VTwin from a generator or Harbor Freight has a Predator 670cc 22 hp VTwin for $750.

Update on my engine search. I couldn't pass on a Polaris Predator 500 (ATV) that I found locally really cheap($100) on CList last weekend. It was still in the frame with the swing arm and solid axle. It came with a new carb and the wiring harness, handle bar with the right and left controls. I figured that I could use the swing arm and axle in place of the trans-axle, but that would leave me without reverse. So I got to thinking of just making a jack-shaft to transfer the drive to the other side, so that I could use the stock WH trans-axle. Well as it always happens, right after you buy one thing, a better deal comes along.

 

So tonight I picked up a 24 horse Kohler horizontal V-Twin that I found on Letgo for $100 and got it for $75. This one runs and has electric start. I was told it was used with a pump or sprayer. Now I need to figure out what size pulley I want to put on it. I have some 15 inch vintage mags I may use and if I use a tall series tire, I think I should be able to get some speed out of it without making the trans axle internals spins to fast. Is my thinking right on this?

 

On my Craftsman, I went larger on the engine pulley and and smaller on the transaxle, but these don't have an external pulley that I can change and I was limited to using the stock wheels and tires on the Craftsman. This WH has 12" wheels on it now, so will going to larger diameter wheels and tires accomplish the same thing. Again is my thinking right?

 

I found surpluscenter.com has the 1 7/16" ID pulleys in 6.75" OD to 18.75' OD with the proper 3/8" key way. I need to figure out what ratios will produce what outcome or just an educated guess. I want to have some fun with this tractor, but I also would like to put it to use. Does anyone know what the stock drive pulley size is on these tractors and what the gear ratios are internally? I know there are probably too many unknown variables, but if there is any mathematical geniuses, mechanical engineers or frankenstieners here, feel free to chime in.

 

Oh yeah, are there any service manuals available for the 70-72 WH? Specs?

Larger tires will result in faster speed. Also small transmission pulley and larger engine pulley will result in higher speed.
