well guys here i am again'as far as the 72 commando 8 smoking more then a chimney plus shooting oil out of the muffler ;yesterday being such a nice day for a change in the upper 60-s i removed the head had the piston all of the way down and felt the sleeve it was as smooth as it could be not one mark or scratch'i then turned the crank so the piston was way up and i wiggled the top of the piston it did move just a little so as i have been told it will need new top rings ;it seems the oil screen is not plugged 'so i was wondering which is the better way to go and the cheapest way as being retired and on a fixed income  shall i have it rebuilt or get a different motor 'the reason i ask is due to a seller that  has a K-241 it needs the carb to be rebuilt plus cleaning the points as he says it does run;it came off a  sears tractor but my question is will a K-241 10 horse  bolt down to the frame of the commando 8  'i thought just maybe for a 100 bucks it might work but again i am no expect on this 'even though my horse is  a 72 model for the year except needing a seat it is in really nice condition for the year ;it does have the deck which again is nice other then the blades needs to be sharpened ; i have a buyer who would pay 200.00 for mine but again for the condition it is in plus the pan i an sure it might be worth more   are a few pictures of the K-241 and any advise would be surly appreciate;

if your existing engine bore (sleeve) is very smooth, it is probable worn as typically on a good engine you will see a few remaining hone marks. Hard to say if you can just rehone and rering with out some precision measurements.

If you trust the seller that the used engine runs good, 2 things to verify:

Is the oil pan the same as yours, or it could be simple to swap oil pans.

Is the crankshaft the same diameter (1" I think) and the length needed for the WH PTO (maybe someone will have more details on this.

If that other engine didn't come out of a wheel horse you might have to change the oil pan because of the mounting holes on the frame.  Not positive .

He can use J-bolts to hook over the frame on the crank shaft side.

The K-181 oil pan will not fit the K-241 but it appears to be a one inch shave (you'll need to verify). If you can get a :wh: pan from a K-241, 301, 321 or 341 (Big Block, not from a shaker plate tractor) you can bolt it up. Otherwise @Lee1977 has the right idea.   :handgestures-thumbupright:
