Predator 22hp Oil Consumption?

Any of you guys running the 22hp predators notice that when you load the engine it will burn oil?  It's fine until I really get the blower loaded up and work it hard.  I'm pretty sure its coming from the crank case vent to the air box. 

Whats the best way to fix this?

Doesn't matter on the brand, shouldn't have that problem.

I assume it is not to full of oil? And it is the correct oil.

Might need to do a leak down test. Sounds like blow by. Might be warranty?

I don't think its too full.  It's real hard to read that dipstick though on this thing.  it's got the correct oil in it.

It doesn't have more then a few hours on it.  I don't think there is warranty on this.  I wanna say I read somewhere that people were putting catch cans on these.  

It runs well and makes good power but IDK if I would buy another.  For 400-500 more you are in GX and Vanguard territory.  I guess we will just see how long this will last.

In that case normally you may have a blow by, that means, Compression vents via Pistonrings to the crankcase.

if oillevel is correct and engine stand for a longer time,

remove Sparkplug,

put few drips about 5ccm of brake fluid in the Combustion chamber and let it work for about 2h,

crank the engine without sparkplug until no more spill is visible,

Insert sparkplug and fire it up.

if it run it will firstly smoke very strong, after engine is warmup the smoke shall be reduced visibily.

if so, make an oilchange and fire it up again.

When smoke is reduced, maybe a hohne and few new Pisonrings are the solution.

 

if not, maybe one or both intakevalve seal is defect.

I bet it makes good power, but a catch can? Wow low hour engine. A buddy of mine has a couple smaller ones runs them hard, no issues.

I know the Vanguard 16 is not a 22 hp but I got two used ones out of Cubs that really run good! I see them from time to time on CL I'll try to get them reasonable.

By the way, any engines consumpts a bit oil.

normally it shall be not smelling or visibly.

at any coldstart, a bit of fuel comes into the oil, that is also normal.

if the engine is just in coldstart and didn't get time to heat up,

the oillevel seems it stay's. This is the mixture.

after a long full load turn (i.eg Highwayuse longterm on Car) the oillevel makes a hop down.

that must not mean your engine burnt in that short timeline all the oil,

mostly it meant the mixture separates and the fuelentry evaporates.

It was new October/November.  

The vacuum fuel pump stopped working on me a few weeks ago during the last storm.  The thing kept sputtering and stalling until I figured out it was not getting fuel thanks to the blue see through fuel line. I just so happend to have one of those electric, low volume pumps I bought for another project.  Wired it up real quick and has been running fine since.  

I might just try the catch can idea.  I'm not too excited about yanking the engine off right now. I would have to do it outside in the cold and then I don't have a tractor ready for snow removal.

Couple of things:

 

If it is still under warranty (emission or otherwise) swap it out now.

 

Since there is only few hours on it, you shouldn't be maxing out the horsepower just yet.

 

That vacuum fuel pump failure may have dumped gas into the crankcase if that is where the pulses come from.

I am running a catch can. But am also now stock. The oil level is very fussy on the engine. Do not over fill it at all!

         That is a very real concern. A little gas in the oil could cause big problems, change the oil and see if it improves.

almost sounds like an oil weight issue, newer engines specify a 5/30 or 0/20 oil, if its a heavier oil like, 10/30 or heavier, until its hot and specs out, it will smoke. 5/30 synthetic will usually cover just about anything.   just my experience, pete

And also be sure to use the fram filter in the manual. I used a stens and it cause an oil issue too.

Thanks for the info.  I'm gonna remove the vac pump setup and change the oil.  Does anyone remember off hand what the recommended amount is for this?

My 22 hp predator filled the crankcase with fuel... I thought it was a float problem!  Before I finish the oil change, I believe I’ll bypass the fuel pump as well!
