PTO Seal and Bearing Numbers?

Recommended Posts

clueless

I'm replacing the clutch plate on my c160, the pto needle bearing looks to be in good shape, the ball bearing is a little questionable. Is there a NAPA number for the 5196/109842 bearing and the 6663 oil seal? Also after removing the two snap ring is the bearing easy to remove? First time doing this, looks fairly easy.

Okay, got my new outer bearing and oil seal. Got the old bearing out and had to soak the PTO stub shaft with some penetrating oil and after about an hour and a little coaxing with a punch and a hammer it came off the bearing. Now what's the best way to install the shaft and the bearing, the shaft  looks like it's going to take a little persuasion to slide into the bearing. It's tighter than Dicks hat band, for you younger guys that's tight. While I'm a BFH kinda guy I don't think that's the way to go :snooty:. As always any advice is appreciated.

I'd like to help you on this one but when I got this tractor the PTO bell was off  and all I had to do was to treat it to electrolysis then the bearing popped right out

Usually best way to deal with the interference fit of a bearing is a press.

I usually get the outer brg in by tapping it in with a hammer and punch. You can freeze the new bearing in you Frigidaire freezer and heat you PTO bell in your Magic Chef oven if you like to make it go easier. Just check your dinner a few nights to make sure you're not getting too much iron in your diet!

If you badlly mushroomed the old shaft, replace it.  If it is just rusty and dirty, file any burrs and clean with sandpaper.  Properly prepared, it should tap in easily.  I have had some that were too loose and needed Locktite 603.

Next question, replaced the out bearing and cleaned the needle bearing and used a little syn grease on it. Put a new oil seal on, should the seal be flush with the clutch plate or down against the bearing? There is about a 1/8" gap.

I believe mine are all flush.

Yes, flush. It really wouldn't hurt to be recessed a bit but it would create a spot for dirt to collect. I use the appropriate sized flat washer on the shaft and tap it home with a short piece of PVC pipe. You can feel and hear when the washer hits the case and the seal will be perfectly flush. :)
