JerryB 12 #1 Posted January 24, 2019 Hello, I was looking at a C160 a guy has for sale by my house. It’s real clean possibly he restored it. It is a hydro. Includes snowthrower, plow and deck. Could anyone tell me what you would think it’s worth. I have a c81 all original I paid 700 for with a real nice deck and I just bought a b100 for 500 but that came with snowthrower, plow and 36 deck. Both are eight s both are eight speeds. And purrr. By the way the guy wants 1600 for C160.

ebinmaine 73,037 #4 Posted January 24, 2019 @953 nut.... Richard, I think it was you that had a neat little plaque that said something about the right price being the one that makes the buyer and the seller both happy. Jerry, as with pretty much anything else the price is driven very much by supply and demand. Up here in Maine that tractor would be worth a little bit more right after a snowstorm.... but I'm not sure I would give quite that much for it unless I had some kind of great proof that the engine had been rebuilt and the hydro transmission was in amazing condition AND all of the implements were in proper working order and not at all worn.
JerryB 12 #5 Posted January 24, 2019 Okay. Well I appreciate the advice very much. If it was an 8 speed I would probably try to strike a deal. I personally like the 8 speeds. Thank you sir. Jerry 1
Sarge 3,465 #6 Posted January 25, 2019 Don't discount that series hydro transmission and especially that tractor - it was one of the best that Wheel Horse and Sundstrand ever built. This is a piston-to-piston type and practically bulletproof. Not to mention, a very strong hydraulic lift. If I overload the rear hitch on mine it will actually lift the front axle off the ground. That hydro, with possibly the exception of using a tiller, is honestly the best tractor you can ask for given its size and weight class. If the engine is low hours or Properly rebuilt and the implements are absolutely in stellar condition - worth every penny of what they are asking. Once you go with a C-160, you'll never look back. I have two, one being a '73 16 Auto (identical, except hydro direction control, which I changed) and those two tractors can easily outwork my D-180 in everything except the 3pt lift and its larger/heavier blade. This next spring, I'm tempted to stuff that 56" blade under one of them and see how it does, they are that strong. Having that single cylinder Kohler big block under the hood and that series transmission, along with a very strong frame was magic - that is a very highly sought after tractor. Everyone I know that has seen mine at work wants one - that model is an animal. Just be aware, there are a lot of flippers on FB and other sites in this half of Illinois. Its a younger crowd (no offense intended) that likes to put a lot of what I call "fluff n buff" on machines and resell them for a big profit. If you go look at it - look at by the mechanical parts, not the shiny stuff. I'd rather buy a neglected finish on the outside with good mechanicals versus something that looks nice and costs a lot of money to repair everything that was ignored or hidden. That is becoming more common now that the "flippers" have gotten into these machines. For a long time, WH was a fairly unknown brand to the main crowd and was overlooked, those days are gone now and with the social media sites and their sale pages, it is becoming a problem. I see a lot of "pretty" machines and have taken the time to look over a few for friends that want them - way overpriced shiny, junk was the result. One 14 Auto a few years ago had a beautiful paint job, new decals and looked right off the showroom floor - no detail left untouched. The engine had a bad rod knock, the transmission was very weak, amazingly, and needed all new bearings in the rear axle at a minimum along with a badly worn out steering system and front axle. The seller wanted $1200 with only a deck, we walked away - so buyer beware paying top dollar. Sarge

bellevillerod 835 #8 Posted January 26, 2019 That was my first Tractor, my dad bought it new. I still use it today as my go to machine. It carries my plow in the winter, my 48 in deck in the summer. It's in need of a paint job and some detail work. But mechanically it is rock solid, that 16hp Kohler thumps when I need it. I have never had a problem with the trans. Come to think of it all I ever had to do was oil changes, plugs and points. New filter and trans fluid every 5 years or so. Great tractors, but as Sarge says check it to make sure its solid under the hood. Start it and run it up to full throttle listen close, it should purr up there. If it spits and pops or is sounding like its missing if you hear ANY knocking think twice. At that price point I think it should be perfect, like showroom perfect. Depending on snow thrower, deck an plow you are still giving 1000.00+ for the tractor. JMTC
