99 314-8 not starting on new battery

Recommended Posts

rwmastel

Hi.  Tractor was running fine when parked 5 weeks ago.  Tried to start it and not enough juice in old Die Hard.  Would crack a couple turns and stop.  Not unusual.  Charged for 4 hours and still nothing.  Unusual. Bought some weird brand battery at TSC.  Hooked it up and now starter won't engage.  See attached.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Rodd

When you say not engaging.. do you mean the starter motor spins very fast but doesn't move the flywheel?  ff so you probably need to clean the bendix...

:text-yeahthat: Also check to see if they are hooked up properly. I acquired a tractor once that would crank but not start, turns out the PO had hooked the battery up backwards. Hooked it up correctly & it's been running good ever since.

That's kind of why I attached a video with sound.

Like I said above, ran fine when parked a few weeks ago.  Starter engaged and slowly turned over 1 or 2 compressions on old battery 2 days ago.  Had low voltage on gage, battery wouldn'ttake a charge.  Now the behavior in video with new battery.  Both batteries had red + connector on right (drivers seat perspective) and I don't think I could reverse those cables if I tried due to length.

works fine here. Relay slams, current flows, and that's it. no starter action :-)

Oh and from the volt meter readings, it seems the battery is hooked up right, and providing enough juice.

1 suggestion would be to move the flywheel by hand just a bit :-)

Oh, it uploaded fine, but used my phone to make video and post. Sorry to hear that. Turning the key produces a metallic clank, like the post is extending from the starter and impacting against the flywheel, but nothing spins.

Not my intent to belittle, some times things can just get over looked.

Are you able to turn the engine by hand?

I've had this for 2 years (first riding mower/tractor) and never tried that.  How would I go about that?  I understand how to do it on a car.  Do all the engine cover plates come off and there's a big nut inside the starter ring?  (In April I had to replace the electrical thing that rides by the ring and generates spark.)  Turn clockwise or counterclockwise?

if yours has a grass screen over the fly wheel that does not spin when the engine is running then you will have to remove it & you should be able to turn the flywheel with your hands. If the screen spins while the engine is running then you should just be able to palm it and see if it will turn.

My reason for having you do this is, sometimes the bendix will get wedged when the starter receives low voltage. Also have had mice pack a flywheel full of nuts over night. Either of these can lock the engine up.

If you put the transmission in neutral, then engage the PTO, you should be able to turn the engine over by turning the PTO pulleys by hand.

As Ed said, another way to turn the engine by hand is to engage the PTO and turn the output by hand.

If it would turn over with the old battery it should turn over with a new one.

RESOLUTION

Since the weather turned bad back when I had this initial problem, I ended up letting the tractor sit in the shed until spring.  So, I dug into it after work the other day and I ended up finding the same old problem as last spring.  Mouse nest behind engine cover plates with insulation chewed on coil wire.  I fixed that and it fired right up.  No, I don't think there was a mouse nest in there in December, but maybe.  Either way, it's resolved now with a new wire.
