Ed Kennell 35,904 #1 Posted November 29, 2018 (edited) I missed the Monday opener, but arrived at my friends camp in Potter County around noon on Tuesday to find they had a good first Monday even though they hunted in a icy rain/sleet all day. Tuesday noon. Needless to say, this looked good, so I unpacked, and headed for my deer stand. After a 40 minute drive and a 20 minute hike, was in my tree stand at 1:00. I was only there about 10 minutes when two doe fed by, so I thought ,this could be a busy afternoon. But, I didn't see another deer for 2 1/2 hours. Then at 3:30 this buck came out of the hemlocks about 160 yards from the stand. I got lucky and the .270 did its part. Two of the Monday hunters went home with their deer, but we had mine and two other deer on Tuesday to fill the meat pole. Wednesday, I filled a couple doe tags. And took a couple pictures of the landowners original cabin and spring run. I saw a few elk on the way home early this morning. Sorry for the poor pics....no light. The fun's over, now the work begins. Edited November 29, 2018 by Ed Kennell 4 6

WHNJ701 4,164 #9 Posted November 30, 2018 I am just curious why do you hang them head, we always used to let them hang by the back legs and butchered them
WHX?? 46,877 #10 Posted November 30, 2018 (edited) Out in the field we hang them by the head, yes by the back legs for butchering. You should move to the UP Pull.... you'd make a good yooper! Edited November 30, 2018 by WHX21 2
Mike'sHorseBarn 2,688 #11 Posted November 30, 2018 We butcher ours from the head down. You cut around the neck and skin down to about the shoulder. Years ago my grandfather modified a vice grip that clamps to the hide the you just pulled down. Then a chain goes from the vice grip to the front bumper of a truck and the truck pulls the hide right off. Skinning could possibly get any easier. Now after that I do have to flip it around, but dad's garage has been modified over the years to accommodate that.

We were serious about it actually... looked at property a few years back, we were between the UP and TN. In the end, we are too close to Grandma and Grandpa to leave ‘em. some day, we’ll find a cabin property and settle with vacation trips!

Head up drains the chest cavity better. Then head down for skinning, caping and butchering.

Came off like a sock off a foot.

Mows4three 825 #18 Posted November 30, 2018 Hey Ed! That's the Potter County I remember. For many years in the 1990s and into the early 2000s so many doe permits were issued by the PA Game Commission that the big woods in God's Country were devoid of ANY deer. We came home from many a hunt up there empty handed when just a few years earlier the meat poles were all full. I miss those days. Nice deer you got and so were the rest of them. We haven't found a recipe to eat the antlers yet but I know you will make some nice mounts for them and cherish them on your wall, anyway. Congratulations...! Cheers! WHX?? 46,877 #22 Posted December 3, 2018 This is how it's done at my place fellas... my venison chilie .... Don't ask me for the recipe cause I make it different every time! Normally I will do shredded cheese for a top dressing but fresh out so japaleno curds had to pick up the slack. Gotta have the venison sausage just to wash things down! 2 2

This was my first archery buck and my first attempt to mount a deer circa 1965. These small Pa. bucks were all trophies back in the 1950- 1970 era. A few of the deer I have mounted since then. There was a taxidermy learning curve. And the results of the PA antler restrictions can be seen. A few from Montana. And this years deer ready for the cape. This is actually a paper mache form I salvaged from an old mount I bought for a dollar at an auction.
Pullstart 59,828 #24 Posted December 8, 2018 So cool! What are the details of the PA antler restrictions? I assume it’s a statewide QDM program?
Ed Kennell 35,904 #25 Posted December 8, 2018 Prior to 2002, the antler requirements were a spike at least 3" long or two 1" long points on one side. In 2002, after much debate and controversy, Pa Game Com. biologist Dr. Gary Ault implemented the current state wide 3 points on one side requirement. There are a couple zones where 4 points on one side was required. Those zones have since been changed to 3 points on top with no need for a brow tine. For youth hunters, the original 2 point or 3" spike is still the requirement.
