The steering gears are starting to jump is there any way to shim them?

Section 18 is not available.

Pull #18 pin and add 3/4" ID shims #16 and #17 as necessary. You want just a slight bit of backlash between the gear teeth through the full rotation of the fan gear.

Sure.  Here is a schematic of the steering.  Pull out the cotter pin 18 and remove the washer 17.  Use a shim or 2 (#16) to effectively pull the fan gear back into the lower steering gear to make it tighter.

If the hints above don't solve the problem check to see that shaft 25 is not moving vertically. If it isn't secure then it can cause the problem you describe.

One other thing to check. See if the mounting ears on piece #19 are cracked. I've had this issue on a couple of my tractors.

What gwest_ca said.

My 417-8 did the same thing (jumping teeth) when I got it. I added a washer to take up some of the play between the teeth and no more issues!
